WOW, Half-Life2 looks with Bloom/HDR.

Post by inphlict »

There is a new unoffical mod made by Neotokyo to add Bloom/HDR effect to Half-Life2.

Here is a screenshot.

meh, slapping light blooms on everything doesn't always make it look better. It looked great in Thief 3, but that doesn't mean that it fits HL2.

Most of them are saying there's very little difference in frame rate. Just a bit longer load time.

HDR and light blooms are two different things. HL2 already has light blooming (the sunset just before Black Mesa East for example). HDR uses floating point values for RGB colour instead of usual 0-255 integer values. This means gradations of colour are represented accurately and not banded due to rounding of colour values to the nearest integer. While this is excellent, and makes clear blue skies look good, it has a huge FPS hit, and even with SLI 6800s you can't have HDR and AA without killing the game.

FYI.

Valve is going to release their own HDR test map soon available for download. That dosen't look like HDR, it's all bloom.

I don't remember the sunset before the Black Mesa East... but this just looks like a vertex/pixel shader that simulates the bloom effect.

You can turn it on via mat_bloom (regular HL2)... I couldn't tell if there was any noticeable difference though. Maybe my 9800 Pro dosen't support it.

it looks alright, but the shots with the scientist being really shiny just doesn't look realistic and more of an annoying, i'm-really-tired effect to it.

the last one here looks great with the subtlety of it.

this effect seems to be the new lensflare pendant. i've seen a certain overuse recently.

not that it's a bad effect - but at some point it does just not look more realistic if it's turned on.

looks like an "im drunk and seeing light halos" effect... kind of disorienting and ugly IMO.

i'd play it - in the unlikely event of it actually releasing as a complete game given the lead time for Black Mesa :|

Looks like that's been built from scratch, so other than the subject matter, you can't really say it's Half-Life 2.

the brickwork texture on the columns framing the shot? looks like printed wallpaper the way it flows from one wall to the next. :puke:
