Using mods without exec line access

Post by MidnightQ4 »

So I have my server hosted by clanservers.com and it runs great but I don't have access to the exec line. Is there anyway I could use a config to set the fs_game parameter and then restart the server? I'd rather not hassle with putting in a ticket request to have them do it back and forth all the time.

i'm pritty sure you need to, they Run a script that will Exec the server if it Exit's, if you dont know what Script to Edit, you are lost in the water.

yea, that would work if he reboots the server, but the change wouldent be a perm change.

once the quake Server starts over, the script will take over and start it how it sits now, rather then how he wants it :)

I think rcon is the administrator pw to the server, not sure. But ask them about it. Should be able to change server variables that way.

Yeah, you'd have to edit the script. I wouldn't recommend it though, unless you know what you're doing.

BTW Amidah, if you're wondering if you're banned, you ain't. We had a good laugh about it aftewards on ventrillo, that it turned out to be edman. Guess he was in a good mood. But as a tip, he aliases frequently. :)

I wouldn't mind that, for now I just want to be able to turn on mods such as x-battle for a few maps or so when playing with my teammates. When something solid comes out I can have them set it up permanently. But I think what you are saying is that you have to reboot the server to get the change to take affect, instead of just doing a spawnserver command or something, like a soft reboot.

I don't think it's possible (it isn't in Q3 and i doubt it is in Q4) to change mods (fs_game) with rcon because the server is already running then. It needs to be started up with rcon. I once tried to change the mod of a linux rent server and i did have access to the startup script, but changing it would make the server not start up again. Can't do anything without root access and knowing the basics of managing linux servers. :icon33:

You don't need root access to administer or run a Linux-hosted Q3A server. Knowing the basics of Linux however is mandatory, yes.

you can't do it if clanservers.COM does not allow it. you make it sound like in order to restart the server clanservers.COM needs to do it via a ticket YUK YUK.

if they allow SSH then you can have full access to your server to do whatever you please .. you could even run a completly different game if you have ftp access as well.

you can't start a server with rcon but you can kill a server with rcon.
Viruseater  clanservers.NET http://www.clanservers.net set up his servers to re-start after the game shuts down but that is his awesome linux tweak.
