MOSCOW. Feb 27 (Interfax) - The funding of Russia's mock Mars mission experiment, Mars-500, is to begin in March, 2005, the Federal Space Agency said in a press release.

Space researchers and participants in the experiment will simulate a 500-day manned mission to Mars in a mock space station, to be assembled on Earth, the press release quotes Roskosmos chief Anatoly Perminov as saying.

Six men, possibly from different countries, will see how humans will react to conditions imitating a long flight to Mars.

"The volunteers will enter a special module next year and will remain there for 500 days, going through all hardships of a long flight to the Red Planet. Many researchers argue that a long stay in outer space may negatively affect humans, causing muscle, bone, immunity and psychological disorders. The experiment will help find answers to all of these questioned," the press release says.
I hope humans can go to mars in the next 5 years or so.

I don't think so they have very little funding now adays, after cold war government didn't care about space anymore. Perhaps companies will find interest and fund it, like they did with the plane industry.

One company can't afford to send people to Mars.

One government may not be able to reasonably afford it either.

Yes but I hope more then one company will invest in this, possibly microsoft like they invested in SETI. I'm sure if they really wanted they could get a shit load of money, perhaps it could be like a multi nation mission, but I doubt US would want that. They would probally start their own mission just to be the first.

It would probably break the US like it did the USSR. We need to get out of the war and fix medicare/medicaid/social security before we really pump money into space. The public would be up in arms if not.

if we ever decide to send a mission (or anyone else for that matter) to Mars, getting there is only half the battle. getting them back home safely would be even more difficult, i imagine.

uhhhhhhh...maybe we should first try something a little easier...like go to the moon...

u do know we have never been there right?
a defining attribute of a government is that it has a monopoly on the legitimate exercise of violence...
