New iPod models?

Post by R00k »

I read a story a few days ago that Apple is introducing a few new iPod models, including a regular iPod with a color display. I've been checking Apple's online store though, and haven't seen any mention of them yet.

Has anybody else heard about them? Have any idea when they may be going on sale?

I've finally stuck back enough cash to buy one, but if there are some better models coming out, I want to wait and get a newer one.

They released a color screen iPod last fall. It's called a photo iPod or something. What they did do in the last few days is lower the price of this photo iPod.
yea i've too been kind of thinking about maybe a new sig but sort of haven't come to quite a decision yet

Hmmm. I've heard of the iPod photo before. I was thinking they had released a normal iPod with a full color display. I need to find the CNN article again and double-check it, I guess.

Well here's the article.
http://money.cnn.com/2005/02/23/technol ... /index.htm

I guess I was misunderstanding, but the way it reads is misleading:
Apple unveils more iPods
New digital music players include models with color screens, a mini with larger storage capacity.

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Apple Computer Inc. introduced new versions of its hugely popular iPod on Wednesday.

The No. 1 seller of portable digital music players introduced a six-gigabyte iPod mini and 30- and 60-gigabyte models of the iPod photo with a color screen.

The new offerings also include a four-gigabyte model for $199 -- down from $249 previously -- and the new six-gigabyte model for $249.
The headline makes it sound like they're coming out with new versions that have color displays, but they don't really mention them anywhere else in the story.

I heard they were dropping the price on the minis and photos, and introducing a 30gb model. That's all I've heard. It's still not enough to convince me to buy one.
That reminds me, I have to go check out some mp3 players; hoping to purchase something in the next week or so. :icon25:

(and... oops, late... :o! )

Yea, I've thought about looking at other, less proprietary models, but I know a couple of people who have iPods, and I just LOVE the controls and the click wheel. After playing with them, I can't imagine using anything else. :icon30:

Really? I've used the click wheel and I don't like it. But I haven't tried others yet, so I can't say I won't dislike those, too. I'm leaning toward the Creative Zen Touch right now, but you never know, I might end up with an iPod in the end. :icon26:

Yea, their 20gb player runs the same price as the 20gb iPod, but has color display, and you can store/transfer any file types on it that you want (huge advantage IMO).

But still, I've barely heard anything about this company or player, I'm not sure I want to spen 300 bucks on anything from them. Do you have one, or know anybody who does?

Yea, I saw that too. But I'm not going to pay for just 4 gigs, and the 6 gig model is only 50 bucks less than the 20gig regular iPod. I can't see a reason to buy one, when for 50 more bucks I can get more than triple the storage space. :smirk:

Are there any extra features on the Minis, aside from the smaller size?

i have an iriver and i'm very satisfied with it. The case it comes with is kinda bulky, but it has decent headphones, the radio works great, you can watch movies on it if you upgrade the us firmware to korean or euro firmware, but you lose the clock function. mmm and http://www.misticriver.net is THE iriver community and they are all pretty helpful and there is a ton of info on there

Just picked up a 1GB Shuffle and its great so far. If you're the type that listens to a playlist on random then you'd probably get a lot of use out of it, especially considering the tiny form factor. If you like to browse and pick songs though it would drive ya nuts due to the lack of display and options.

Rumor was that the mini would get a colour screen and and increase in storage. It was unveiled with more capacity but nothining on the new screen. :/

Is it just me or does it seem like there are too many different ipod models these days to keep track of?

What kind of software do you need for it? Does it function like a normal USB hard drive, where you can just copy files through the Windows interface?

And how is the sound quality? Ever hooked it up to external speakers, or through an amp?

Yea, I have to have the menu. I've got a ton of songs I'd want to put on there, and it would probably drive me crazy not being able to pick and choose.

batterylife has increased from 8 to 18 hours, but ipodlounge.com says their model ran for 26 hours. Sounds good, but Apple doesn't include a charger anymore, you'll have to do with the USB 2.0 cable or buy a charger yourself.

I did notice the improved battery life. Do minis have the same level of compatibility with everything that the regulars do? As in, can you buy all the same accessories for them and such? And do they have the same menu system as the regulars?
