q4 computer suggestions

Post by rockethumiliator#1 »

I have not even enough ram on my computer to run q4 but i was wondering what you guys think i should get for it. I have virtually no ram :puke: (192 megs) and my graphics card is almost obsolete. What can a quake hungry gamer like me do to actually run the game ? (btw i dont have much money so i guss buying like an alienware computer is out the question) :icon23:
Jackal:you're probably a 12 year old goth outcast who dreams of anal sex with Sephiroth everynight while CLoud grants you a reacharound.

You certainly dont need 2 gigs of ram and 256 of video memory.

1 gig and 128 will definitly be enough at anything less then max settings. Q4 is all CPU...

Of course this all depends on how much tweaking you want to do and what mod your going to play Q4Max .7 is crazy smooth and the full release should be awesome...

riddla is talking 100 FPS at ultra quality? An Athlon64 3200+ with 1 GB ram and a GF 6600 GT or 6800 would be more than enough for really pleasant smoothness.

Not exactly. I've got a tuned and fresh install of XP running on a 3200 AMD64, 1GB OCZ, and a BFG OC 6600GT and I still get the odd fps drop at 1024x768 on medium quality. Riddla is right, its better to go for overkill than just enough.

A couple of questions.
1) What are your PC specs at the moment? e.g. processor speed, model of graphics card etc.
2) How much money do you have to spend?

vid mem means fuckall. gpu/mem clock is what matters.

if you want to upgrade right now with hopes of not having to in the future get a dual core cpu. the asrock 939 uli695 mobo is a great buy ($66 @ newegg) if you want to keep your agp card and then upgrade to a pci-e card down the road. the reviews of that board are pretty damn good too, most saying that there's no loss in using either agp versus pci-e in terms of each cards limits. and you'll need a gig of ram at least.

all that for $450-500. or you could go all out and get the latest like some suggest for twice the cash and only 20% perf. increase.

q4 is highly CPU dependent. concentrate on getting the fastest cpu you can afford.. i wouldn't worry about top end graphics card.
