So the The Da Vinci Code

Post by Don Carlos »

IS it just me or does old Ronald Howard appear to be hitting
the right sort of notes with this film? Just seen the new lengthy
trailer and it appears to be atmospheric and just what i had
pictured in my mind...I think this is gonna be a good film...!!!

Thoughts?

Oh yeh, and the cast is excellent!!!

It only took me like 3 or 4 days to read it so you shouldn't have any problems.

I'm looking forward to the movie. Unfortunately I'm sure it's going to stir a massive uprising of holy-rollers to attack everyone involved - I'm just glad someone had the nuts to make it.

I've said it once and I will say it again, The Davinci Code is probably one of the worst books I have ever read. I'm not even trying to be a naysayer here, it was just plain terrible. I read the whole thing in about a day and half just to get it over with.
Furthermore, I don't understand why people call the book controversial. It's based on half truths and made up connections. How can that piss anyone off? It's fiction. If you're going to get angry at it then you may as well rage against Harry Potter and LOTR's too.

Why did you think it was one of the worst books you've ever read?

Absolutely 0 character development, Totally cliched, paper thin characters, a story based on half truths presenting itself as fact, and the incessent mental deus ex machina (ie: Robert magically knowing everything about anything).

well he does teach at harvard....

but i agree with you. it read like a hardy boys novel or other such crime/mystery novel. every chapter ended quite predictably. when i started reading it my first though was how closely it resembled a screenplay.

yeah i cant wait for it. loved the book so this should be good. though personally i enjoyed angels & demons about 100x more than the da vinci code. i wish they woulda started out with that one seeing as it's actually more of an introduction to the whole thing.

If you think The Da Vinci Code is bad try reading his 'Digital Fortress' or 'Angels And Demons'. Essentially identical stories to The Da Vinci Code with copycat characters. If someone else had written them after he'd published The Da Vinci Code he'd have sued for plagiarism.
As a mere taste of the sheer awfulness of 'Digital Fortress' (which is all about cryptography and the NSA) there's a scenario at the end of the book where a group of the world's finest cryptanalysts are trying to solve a written puzzle to reveal a numeric key which they need to disable a virus which is threatening to lay bare the NSA database to the world. The first line of the puzzle begins "The prime difference between..." These intellectual giants and mathematical geniuses scratch their heads and wrack their planet-sized brains for ages then one of them has a Eureka moment and screams "OMFG!!! It means a PRIME number!!!!"

LOL, that's completely retarded.

I didn't really find the DaVinci Code to be like that though. Maybe I just have an inferior mental capacity to you guys, but I didn't think any of the puzzles and stuff were that transparent or easy.

I do agree that the book read almost like a screenplay - but that was part of what kept me wrapped up in it and made it so easy to read. I think it's hard to write a book like that in a more traditional voice because it would be boring.

Digital Fortress was a really shitty book, but I enjoyed his other three ones. It's simple entertainment, not Nobel Prize winning world litterature.

I think having read Cryptonomicon ruined it for me. It was just so stupid and corny in comparison.

Word. The thing that bugged me the most was everyone saying it was "gripping" and "a page turner." But that was only because he uses stupid techniques at the end of chapters where the characters say,
Dan Brown in every other chapter wrote: "OMG! I figured out the puzzle! The solution is-"
And then the lights went out...
End of Chapter! LOL!
Angels and Demons was a bit of the same, but more unbelievable. That said, I found both to be entertaining for lazy pleasure reading.

I just started reading that instead of the Da Vinci Code, because a second person in this thread said about reading that one first. I'm such a lazy reader it'll take me a while even though it's a piece of cake to read.
