Why is noone playing Q4 online?
I just took a peak at the Quake 4 stats (according to Gamespy) and the total number of players online are 184! yikes.
This might be since its so late here (11:40 pm PST) but still thats a very low number for the new quake.
My guess is that noone wants to upgrade for a better computer that can run Quake 4 decently, so all the quakers went back to playing Quake 3 Arena (which isn't even that great of a game really. My favorite quake and one of my favorite games that I still play to this day, is Quake 2, and is much better than Quake3). Maybe people think the mp is just a clone of Quake 3 and would rather play that since mostly everyones computer can run Quake 3 at max quality. Quake 4 is similar to Quake 3 in mp, but its still a whole nother game. Just like all the other Quakes, they have some of the basic quake formula still there, but its still different and not the exact same game over and over again.
Its a great game with great graphics, I just can't figure why noone wants to play it.

WTF there are way more then that, are you sure that isn't just users playing with gamespy? because I fucking hate gamespy as do many other people and therefore we don't use their lame ass launcher thing... I can say for a fact i've sorted the servers and seen serveral 8/8 12/12 servers, enough to be higher then your 184 number
Why not?

Try going here http://www.gamespy.com/stats and see for yourself.
http://www.csports.net also lists the number of online players, but Quake 4 isn't listed (probaly becouse ASE still doesn't support it).
But thats how many players showed last I checked, at 11:40 pm.
And also I don't think GSA is crap. I used to play on ASE until Yahoo! took over, but even before that I think GSA was a better game browser. I'm also a subscribed user :icon25:

ASE is still perfect for Q3 (and a bunch of other games) btw.

I used to use ASE but they havn't been able to support Quake 4 since the day it came out (which is like 3 months) and theres still no support for it.
But GSA is not perfect either, DOD: Source and the Half-life 2 third party mods are still not supported, but the word is that their working on it and it should be released soon (unlike ASE, which harldy ever even has updates anymore due to Yahoo! screwing it over when they bought it out).
anyway, to each his own. I prefer GSA.

I've read things about ASE being slow to update the mod filters for certain games, but if you play Q3 mainly you don't want/need anything else.
Setting ASE up to startup the right Q3 version 1.30/31/32 is relatively easy too.
For Q4, ASE is obviously totally useless (except when you have some favorite servers you always play on).

Everytime I try going online every server I connect to sucks and there's so much lag I can't play. I was online the other day and two servers in a row shut down because they were experiencing so much lag. I immediately found myself a good Q3 game and was happy. I've played Q4 MP with bots tons of times now, but the online play isn't up to par yet.
The number 1 cause of death in games is panic.

not being able to run quake4/doom3 engine is something from 2 years ago. sure there are still people who are not sure if itll run, but you really dont need the monstercomputer you needed 2 years ago. it runs fine on moderate rigs.
it is indeed the billions of backbreaking bugs that the game offers - no autodownloading, playernames/models missing, flucuating pingtimes, et al

Funny, I havn't had any issues with Quake 4. No lag (ping or performance wise) but I have seen alot of people get "timed out" and disconnected, although it never happens to me.
Of course Quake 4 runs fine for me becouse I have an elite machine (Geforce 7800GTX 256mb, Athlon FX-55 (2.6ghz) and 2gb Corsair Twin-X series ram).
Everything runs smooth at high quality, although I keep the anti-aliasing and anisotropic filters off.
I wish I could run this thing in utlra quality, and if I try to things can get choppy, but atleast there isn't a huge difference really.
I also didn't just use ASE for Quake 3, but for a ton of other FPS games. And I don't play Quake 3 anymore (never was a huge fan of it, it was an ok game) but I still play Quake 2 and I also play Quake 4, and a ton of other games, maybe 9-10 others (Quake 2, Quake 4, Battlefield 2, Call of Duty 2, Team Fortress classic, Half-life 2: Deathmatch, Day of Defeat Source, Counter-strike Source, FEAR, Tribes 2, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Unreal Tournament, and Unreal Tournament 2004) those are the current games I play online. Also Planetside I play and World of Warcraft.
I guess I'm a hardcore online first person shooter junkie

I agree, that server auto download bug kills my urge to pub. Spent about 40 mins one time trying to find a server to connect to, for it to only last a mere 15 min 1v1 match, then I had to look again, I said fuck it, lol.riddla wrote:I sincerely believe the vast majority of people who already own Q4 are foregoing MP until a major patch.
I played q4 for about 5 hours last night and had no problems connecting on any server...the missing file thing happens to me like once out of 20 servers. I dunno why so many morons are complaining about the netcode cause it seems fine to me and I have the crappiest isp on the planet..go figure. Seems like most noobs are pissed cause they can't run the game properly..once you get the frames, the game feels so smooth...
If you like q3, then I dunno why you don't like q4 :icon27:

Ye, I'm with Riddla on that. There are so many bugs, I discover new bugs all the time, I'm totally not confident iD/Raven will fix half of them without a program or at least a website to report the bugs.riddla wrote:I personally would rather you guys take your time and shore up EVERYTHING in this patch - there are plenty of other games on my HD to play in the meantime.rgoer wrote:Autodownload is coming (so are a lot of other new features/bug fixes). I heard q4's expension will be named "a bug's life"..any truth to this??Jenny wrote:Ye, I'm with Riddla on that. There are so many bugs, I discover new bugs all the time, I'm totally not confident iD/Raven will fix half of them without a program or at least a website to report the bugs.
p.s. you broke my heart..I don't love you no more..
Really, I dont think there are that many show stopping bugs.Jenny wrote:Ye, I'm with Riddla on that. Autodownload.
Client-Server Mismatch Kick.
Sound.
Netcode.
The first 2 we now know will be corrected, which is great and will hopefully help out the new players in the FPS genre. However since the map issue is mostly a tourney problem, there are not that many custom FFA/CTF maps are there?, and most new players arent going to be playing tourney, I dont think it will help to boost the numbers in the community.
Sound is critical, and I dont know if it can or will be fixed. I only included netcode because I believe it has an impact on the sound issue. Sound gets dropped at anything over 80 ping, and on a less solid server anything higher then 20 seems buggy, I shouldnt be seeing dropped sounds at 50 ping. Positioning through sound is poor at best, and buggy, if its default or openAL. Now I dont know for sure, but I have been told that the X-FI or whatever creative cards perform the openAL calculations in hardware, while anything else, my audigy 2 for example, use software. Its interesting to see the differences between the two, but imo the default sounds better then openAL, when I have openAL on there is an echo almost like EAX shit is running though the console doesnt say its on. Then again, the console is apparently an unsupported legacy feature right activision??

Of course there are plenty of features that I would like to see but with autodownload fixed, and hopefully some of the sound issues worked around, the world would be a better place. I dont even expect a vertex implimentation...
Would be above and beyond the call of duty if raven actually went to the community for requested features though...hint hint. :icon26:
As for waiting and patching everything I would prefer not.
Autodownload.
Shotgun/HB Fix.
Sound.
RELEASE.
Then later...
Vertex
FPS Optimizations, there are some apparently which arQon has implemented.
Different Huds so we can see what ammo we have.
Brightskins
Painsounds!
New Models, something to atleast fill the hitbox.
Things like that...

Funny, I never have had a problem with tons of bugs in game or the bugs you guys are mentioning. The only thing thats keeping me from playing on some servers is that auto-downloading is disabled. THATS the only issue I have with the game. Otherwise it runs flawlessly (but I understand there must be lots of other gamers who are experiencing other bugs that I don't have, which is resulting in the low stats).
Also I agree, it doesn't take a super elite rig to run the Doom 3 engine anymore, but I still see people online complaining about lag.
