Windows xp shutdown problems

Can anyone here advise me how to find out about XP shutdown problems? Something on my PC is stopping it from shutting down properly and causes it to hang. I need some kind of shutdown logger that lists applications being told to shut and the time it took to do so. I have used something like that in the past but am unable to rememeber.
