win xp and memory management

Im thinking of getting my workgroup laptops, and wonder if there is an optimal amount of RAM for windows xp to operate. the programs we use dont require much, I was thinging of a gig per machine, but recall some vague issue with ram management in xp.

Is this true, if so would a gig be too much if its not all being used. The machines are less than 2gighertz IBMs.

512 works great for XP.. i have a machine running 384 in a machine my GF is running. plays games and stuff pretty decent.. boot time isnt the best, but it works..

Im sure it works, but does it choke if you have a gig of ram, and the apps ur running dont use it all? Does it manage ram well - thats my main question, not how small an amount can I get away with.

if you can swing it go for a gig. 512mb is ok on a desktop but you start getting some really slow hdd's on laptops. saves alot of disk swapping when you have a gig.

I wouldn't think XP would have any issues with a gig of RAM, I would definately get a gig if I could, like shadd_ said, it would be better since laptops usually use 5,400 RPM drives

It's memory management is excellent and it will page less with 1GB or more (although you should still have a pagefile).
