So my girlfriend's mom sent me this today via email....

It was an email that was forwarded a couple times. I have no idea why she decided to send me this. Screenshotted to preserve original editing:

When I received this email I was prepared for something ridiculous, retarded and religious bullshit because that's the kind of email that she sends my girlfriend all the time. She's never sent me stuff before because my girlfriend never gave her my email address because of these retarded emails, but she's got it now because I had to send her something.

So anyways, I open it and start skimming and I see that this is supposed to be quoting Andy Rooney and that he's saying some of the most ridiculously ignorant and racist things I've ever heard. I don't buy a word of it and I do a little research and of course find that it's fake:

http://www.snopes.com/politics/soapbox/rooney4.asp

I emailed her back saying the following:
FYI, this is fake: http://www.snopes.com/politics/soapbox/rooney4.asp

It looked much too abrasive for Andy Rooney and I did a little research on it.
That's not exactly what I would have prefered to have said, but I had to utilize some diplomacy since she's probably my future mother in-law. My girlfriend is not at all like her mother and she's actually repeatedly told her mom to stop sending her these stupid fucking chain emails.

Yeah, this email was impressive not only because it was a chain email from 2-3 years ago, but that it was also just so damn ridiculous. My girlfriend has her email set to automatically filter out her mom's email and I guess I will have to do the same now.

It's too bad that Andy Rooney DIDN'T say those things. He's 100% correct. Except for the stupid emphasis on the pledge of allegiance at the end, though.

Oh, and I love snopesing people's retarded emails. It's such a nice little backhanded way of saying "YOU'RE A FUCKING IDIOT."

I'd actually have to agree with Andy Rooney who responeded to this false email with:
About a year ago, I became aware of a more serious theft of my name and it is so hurtful to my reputation that it calls for legal action against the thief. Hundreds of people have written asking if I really wrote the 20 detestable remarks made under my name that have had such wide circulation on the Internet.

Some of the remarks, which I will not repeat here, are viciously racist and the spirit of the whole thing is nasty, mean and totally inconsistent with my philosophy of life. It is apparent that the list of comments has been read by hundreds of thousands of Americans, many of whom must believe that it accurately represents opinions of mine that I don't dare express in my column or on television. It is seriously damaging to my reputation.
It's only fitting that the woman who sent me the email to me has thorough dislike of people who are not white, don't live in the suburbs, aren't Catholic, aren't against abortion, don't drive an American car, or have any sort of ideas or beliefs outside of the "norm".

He sure is.. the part about "African" Americans and Miss White America is dead on. I'm willing to bet that Chris Rock will tell you the same thing.

I'm not sure why this (even if true) should matter to me.

Chris Rock likes to make jokes about how white people have a hard on for the black-white thing. That's why the word nigger is censored on this board and the word kike is not. It's why Dave Chapelle can get away putting a skit on TV about the Niggar family and some redneck comedian like Jeff Foxworthy would get 15-20 for hate crimes. There's nothing racist in that email unless you're a person who thinks that the only way to solve a problem with race--or anything else for that matter--is not to discuss it

So you agree with:
I have the right NOT to be tolerant of others because they are different, weird, or tick me off.

I agree with that statement.
If you have the right to be tolerant of something doesn't the same right exist to be intolerant? ?
?

How do hate crimes start?

absolutely. the minute you start allowing the government to impose defined levels tolerance on people (mind you, tolerance differs from things like public safety) you open one more door for government intervention in private life

It's a reality of what happens when cultures construct notions of an Other, be it racially, ethnically, sexually... but if i want to be intolerant of my neighbor who lets his dog shit in my yard, I'm well within my right. If I want to go over to his apartment and blow his head off because I hate his dogs yapping, I've crossed over from protected, constitutional opinion into the area of public safety. It's pretty simple really.

Not being tolerant of others means harassing others, belittling others, basically just being a dick. Being tolerant doesn't mean you have to agree with what others do or think. All it really means is that you don't bother them as long as they don't bother you. It's much easier to just keep your mouth shut rather than be an asshole just for the sake of it.

So, if you're telling me that's really the kind of person you want to be, then that's cool I guess. Just don't hang around me, because I don't like people that start shit with others just over things like the type of person they are or some other shitty reason.

Well, tolerance certainly has different levels. For example, a government could be intolernat of a different religion and not allow people to practice that religion. I don't think the US government promotes tolerance through legislation, but that they fight intolerance. What I mean by that is that they aren't saying that you have to be best friends with that gay couple next door, but that you can go and cutt their penises off because they are gay.

How so? You can be intolerant without "starting shit" with people. The point is not that being intolerant is right or wrong, it's that you have the Right to be intolerant if you want to.

Meh
In a social or political sense, intolerance is the absence of tolerance toward (acceptance of) people with differing viewpoints. As a social construct, it is open to interpretation. For example, one might define intolerance as an expressed, negative or hostile attitude toward another's views, even if no action is taken to squelch such opposing views or silence those who hold them. Tolerance, in contrast, can mean "disagreeing peaceably." Emotion is a primary factor that differentiates intolerance from respectful disagreement.

Common forms of intolerance include racism, sexism, homophobia, ageism, religious intolerance, and intolerance of differing political views. However, it is not limited to these forms: one can be intolerant of any ideas or anyone. Intolerance is based in prejudice, and can lead to discrimination.

In its everyday form, intolerance is an attitude expressed through angry argumentation, looking down at people because of their characteristics or viewpoints, negatively portraying something due to one's own prejudice, etc. On a more extreme level, it can lead to violence - in its most severe form, genocide. Possibly the most infamous example in Western culture is the Holocaust. Colonialism was based, in part, on a lack of tolerance of cultures different than that of the mother country.

Not exactly a word I'd want associated with me in the general sense.

What. I'm not trying to impress anybody. I just think it's a good general definition of social intolerance.

I'd also like to point out that a person murdering a person is a different crime from a person murdering a person because they are black.
