Chain letter emails

Post by tnf »

Anyone have one of those friends, relatives, or someone you hate but who managed to get your email address that is always forwarding you some random bullshit emails about shit like Pepsi lawsuits or M$'s new email testing program that pays you for emailing or the one I got today about Ollie North testifying that he was protecting his family from Osama 20 years ago or something? The one today said I HAD TO KEEP IT GOING BECAUSE THE CHAIN HAS BEEN UNBROKEN FOR 3 YEARS.

Question - are these simple annoyances, or is there a goal to the creation of this shit like generating a big list of active email addresses or something?

My gf's mom sends me shit like that all the time -- I often wonder the same thing when I get them.

I mean, some of them are promoting a political stance or a product or something, so you can see how they would have been created. But some of them are just completely irrelevant, and it almost seems like they are a tool from the internet gods to get a list of how many gullible people use the internet or something.

mostly an annoyance, although it does generate a big list of active email addresses and thereby increases the chance of more spam. if these emails contain jpgs for .gifs for example, as soon as these are displayed, the host knows that your email address is an active one.

even funnier when people "unsubscribe" to spam emails when asked which is only a trick for the spammer to get you on their active list.

1) tell them to stop sending themto you, and why

2) if they don't comply - blacklist.

Redirect their emails to the trashcan.

No one I know sends shit like that. I delete everything that I don't know who or where it came from.

The only thing more stupid than chain letters are the people who send them. :dork: :icon13:

I've been unable to understand the logic behind these as well. I don't receive chain letters anymore but I do get similar things through IM and myspace.
