Tilde/hash key

Quite some time ago, someone at q3w linked me to some software ( I have no idea what that software was) which changed my tilde/hash key. I really can't remember the reason why I needed to change something, I think I was trying to swap something around, but anyway, that key has been 'p' and 'P' for a long time now. I've replaced the keyboard with a brand new one today of the exact same model, a Trust KB-1300, PS/2 input. With the trust drivers or standard microsoft drivers, the key remains at 'p' instead of hash, and remains at 'P' instead of tilde when holding shift. Any way I can get that key back to normal? My 'p' key is still the same, so basically I've ended up with duplicate lower and upper case 'p' keys. As a test, the Accessories/Accessibility/On-screen keyboard tilde and hash works fine with the mouse, so I'm not sure exactly where the problem lies regarding the keyboard. My hash/tilde key is directly above the right shift key, and left of the enter key. TIA.

Sounds like you need to format C:

um.. no. Don't format C:\

First of all - is the software STILL installed?

Really sounds to me like some registry keys were changed.

You might need to drop a few coins into the back of your PSU.

I think you're right about registry keys. As far as the software, it's installed now and has been uninstalled and reinstalled. It doesn't seem to change anything though.

You used a key remapping program that changes the key mappings in the registry. Perhaps the one linked to in an the ESR article: ESReality.com - Keyboard multiple keypress fix updated

I tried this program you linked. I can't even find a tilde or hash key on it to remap to my keyboard.

go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout

that's where any remapped keys will be sitting.

hit 'export' on the file menu in case something bollockses up. now delete the entry called 'scancode map'.

log off/on or restart your machine.

you... can always do a brute way of resetting the system registry hive. I don't recommend it but I'm 99% positive it will fix your problem.

use your windows recovery disk and boot from it. Hit R to go into the recovery console.

you'll get a black screen asking you to choose your Operating System. Choose Windows and hit Enter.

You'll see C:\WINDOWS now.
type in this

Code: Select all

md tmp
copy c:\windows\system32\config\system c:\windows\tmp\system.bak

delete c:\windows\system32\config\system

copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config\system
Now type in Exit.

This will reboot your computer with a fresh system registry hive. The downside to doing this is that any hardware you installed will need to be reinstalled and any driver updates you've done will need to be done again.

Good luck!

Thats not exactly good advice since it affects far more than just his keyboard :icon27:

Yeah, that all sounds too risky and too much hassle. Well, I can get those characters with the accessibility/on screen keyboard if need be. Basically, you could say I made a 'hash' of things. :icon26:

 aye - you could try seaching the registry for 'scancode map' - there are a few places it mentions 'keyboard layout'. maybe whatever app you used wrote to one of those.

Never claimed it was "good" advice. I just meant if in the worst case scenario he can't fix the keyboard by any other methods to try that. I wouldn't recommend it for anything but a last resort. I just had to do it to clear some malware registry keys in the hive that I was denied access to as Administrator. So I ended up just trashing the whole hive and replacing it.

Hey, I was just renaming a shortcut on my start menu for tomb raider- legend. I accidentally pressed the hash key instead of the minus key and was like 'wtf, the hash is back and so is the tilde'. Weird because I don't remember exactly sorting it out other than pressing a few things on these programs you guys linked. I only have Oeloes key tweak program installed now so it's probably that or else perhaps the new keyboard sorted itself out after a reboot, I dunno. Anyway, benefit of the doubt, thanks to 4 days and Oeloe for the links.
