do you unzip them to reg quake 3 directory or the mod subdirectory?

If the zip has the mod dir inside of it then straight into the main Q3 dir.

When updating back up your q3config.cfg (in mod dir) and any other configs the mod might use, this way you won't get your settings overwritten if the new update comes with configs.
Maps I always but in baseq3 and they work with all other mods.

MAPS => BASEQ3
[insertNameOfMOD] FILES => [insertNameOfMOD] FOLDER
simple, ain't it?
