Help me connect computers please...$$ for help

I need help connecting two computers to play against my son in the same house. I have computers connected bye a cat 5 ethernet cable..can some one tell me how step by step please?

Easiest way is to install windows XP on all computer and get yourself a good ROUTER , STRAIGHT RJ-45 CABLE and just plug all that...
