What's the point of installing mods and patches?

I have never understood what the point of downloading mods. They're difficult to understand, make no sense to me. I don't even know what they do. I see different names that don't have any decriptions at all. Then there are patches that seem to have no point at all. The game is just as good without all the extra screen displays so whats the point?

Urban Terror changes QuakeIII completely. It no longer looks like Q3. It still plays and feels like Q3, but looks more modern and real. It's not very hard to install, and you can find plenty of help here: http://www.urbanterror.net

Take a look at some of the screenshots from that link I posted. Go through the pages of news, on the front page. There are recent posts, 4 to 5 pages deep. Several show screenshots of maps and player skins.

I've been playing Urban Terror since about 6 months after its first release, back in August 2000. I think I first played it the following winter, as instagib took a turn for the worst and lost most of it's players.
