Recommended setup for compiling maps on a remote computer

Post by a13n »

Hi.
I've used remote compiling for quite some time using linuxq3map2.
Server softwares are httpd, sshd and smbd.
I'm just wondering whether I should put all the mapping assets, such as maps, textures and models on a remote pc and change file transfer phase or not.
By doing so all the werkz can be shared between client pcs.
The fallback should be the increased reading time of assets when using radiant.
Has anyone here ever done the same or similar things?
Or do you know better way of remote compiling and are you kind enough to advise me the way it should be?

O.K.
I've just done that.
As expected reading time for assets apparently increased, becuase my network is limited to 100Mbps ideally, namely 12.5MB/s, 1/8 the number of the local hardrive.
Besides map loading in game increased though this might be solved by putting essetial assets on local drive and setting fs_homepath or fs_cdpath against remote files, but I won't do this becuase it feels wastful.
Beyond that, this approach should make me more relaxed to release the hassle to keep things sync'ed between server and a few clients.
Maybe upgrading to 1000Mbps should help but my policy says that I should wait for a few years or more.
Oh, I need to resize the partition for home directory.
