SyncError Q4 mappack contest by id
oh yeah....thanks man! I guess I have been in console land too long. I sort of forgot about that stuff.
It seems that if there are no custom models or textures used the pak files would be small, so I wonder if maybe they mean something more than that?

Probably just common sense stuff like "don't have craploads of brushes embedded in the architecture that nobody can see and that aren't required."unitool wrote: It seems that if there are no custom models or textures used the pak files would be small, so I wonder if maybe they mean something more than that?
Honestly (and I'm not trying to flame) do you guys think this is worth doing? There are very few people playing Q4 online, this pack might bring some people back, but really is it too little too late? Is anyone even going to play these levels? Sure I could do it for fun, but I'd rather make a level for a game that has a player base, heck even Quake 3 had substantially more players today.

Yeah.
I guess being recognized by id software is nice.. but other than that, there is not a great deal of motivation to do it. Pisses me off that I have a great map to submit, but its almost exclusively customed textured

Yeah, that custom texture thing locks out a lot of the talent, since anybody who was making maps for the community right now was likely listening to the masses who have been demanding 'new textures' for ages... and fairly so.StormShadow wrote:I guess being recognized by id software is nice.. but other than that, there is not a great deal of motivation to do it. Still, I gotta say: I'm submitting something, even if it's something old, and if I wasn't going away for x-mas I'd try to get something new together. There are more people playing Q4 than folks like to admit, and I don't make q4 maps thinking "millions will play this", anyway. The motivation to be included in a community map pack that actually rolls WITH an id patch is pretty cool on its own, and I think that Q4 is actually a really good game, right now... I play Q4 every week, and given my schedule, that's saying a lot.
Props to Id for doing this; hopefully they're setting a trend. Video games are big business, now.. This is a nice wave to the mapping community, and maybe a way for new mappers to get noticed.

lols.....it's that same crappy patch nightmare of a map I have been "working on" forever, but you never know. It could happen.QuakerX wrote:unitool: If you don't submit a map for this contest I will HUNT YOU DOWN! I KNOW WHERE YOU LIVE!!!

Interesting contest, would like to enter it with a map on which I set
myself a deadline of the 31st of january anyway.
However I used a custom texture+shader and a light alpha texture,
they together make an amazing 70kb zipped, and disallow me to
enter the contest. Is the rule not a bit too strict?
Still, the I'm looking forward to the entries and the final result already.
Good luck..

I agree, it's a nice opportunity for mappers to get well-known.GODLIKE wrote:Props to Id for doing this; hopefully they're setting a trend. Video games are big business, now.. This is a nice wave to the mapping community, and maybe a way for new mappers to get noticed.
Maybe I misunderstood, but this isn't the first time a developer includes custom maps into a patch/expansion version: Raven included some of the best custom maps (that were available at the time) with the expansion pack for Elite Force (there might be other developers who've done the same thing).
