Question about screenshots and field of view

Post by Method »

Quake brothas, got a question for ya. I noticed that a lot of mappers for Quake 3 take their screenshots with high fov. If I had to guess maybe 130 or so. Is there a particular reason why you guys do that? I can think of only one, which is to see as much as possible with a wide angle, but is there any other reasons? I like the way screenshots look and now that Quake 4 enables users to set FOV higher than 110 I think I'll be taking wide angle shots as well.

120FOV is a pretty standard way of playing the game.

I see what you mean. It's just in Q4 for a while we cound't go higher than 110.

Could you guys list the fov value you use to take screenshots?

I don't think higher fov values like that are standard stuff at all. Ask all around (on esr forums for example) and you will get a very mixed result, people saying they use 90 default, to 100, 110 etc.

Personally I've used 105 in quake 3 and use the same thing in quake 4.

Yeah, a lot of times I'll use FOV 110 or 120 for screenshots/levelshots for maps simply because it provides that wider viewing angle allowing the viewer to see more in the shot. It also provides sort of a unique feel to the screenshot so that it looks a little more surreal. Depending on the architecture style of the map and the composure of the screenshot, upping the FOV can increase the coolness factor of your map by 15%. :P

I used FOV 130 to take a WIP shot of Da Courtyardz and it made it look 15% cooler.

I think I'll be using higher fov to take screenshots starting now.

GG :)
I use 110 for all my goodies, playing and screenies.
I use to use default but one of my buds from the old east server, donut, got me hooked on using 110.

I've been using 120 in q3. In q4 I set it to 130 to compensate the slow feeling caused by a camera's viewheight :P I lower it to 90 or 100 for levelshots to reduce surreal effect and show the map the way it is seen by an average Joe.
