MS Virtual PC

Post by Foo »

Gets my seal of approval... got the original dos version of CnC up and running without much hassle at all!

And since it's free now, little reason not to give it a whirl. Who doesn't have an old 98 license key lying around unused now?

Do you have to install the full guest OS or just have the key? I have both, just curious.

Install the guest OS.

There are limitations, Direct3D isn't supported because the emulator doesn't access your devices directly, rather MS selected some specific hardware to emulate. The graphics card is something like an S3 Trio and the motherboard is an old Intel chipset.

Of course, it still interfaces with your CD drive and indirectly with your network adapter.

Also it gives you some shit about not running on XP home but works fine so far.

I'm like a kid with a new toy with this VPC business. Going to play through C&C for the first time in years. Then possibly theme park.

Yeah, I'm digging it so far. I've been using dosbox but it can be a hassle with the settings on each game. This is more like what I want without dual booting. :icon14:

VMWare offers experimental support for Direct3D:

And it is also free:

+ It offers better support for Linux

Thanks Az, I'll give that a go too. Might get better luck with some of these games!

Me? Nossir, always been pay-for software so I've never used it at home, and there's little scope for it at work :(

Also I can only find a 30day trial key for this? Seems it's not really free?

By far the most awesome thing for retro games. It does seem to have issues with something like direct3d, or OpenGL, but I have fun with the classics I grew up with: Amazon Trail, Myst etc.
