Punkbuster (I read the sticky)

Hey, every time I enable pb through the multi player menu it just disables itself again. I tried the commands shown in the sticky but all I get when I try cl_punkbuster 1 is "cl_punkbuster is read only." What's the dilly?

the console command for enabling punkbuster should be:
\pb_cl_enable

If you try that and it doesn't enable it, you should hopefully receive a constructive error message, at least...

I tried that, the only one that returns anything is the one I mentioned that is "read only."

How did you fix it. I have the same problem and I can't get it to work.I tried pbsetup.exe, \pb_cl_enable, and even \cl_punkbuster 1 (which gives me the 'cl_punkbuster is read only' message.
The game played fine online for years with PB and now it won't.
I uninstalled Q3Arena totally, reinstalled, applied the PR 1.32 and tried the game.
This time, PB would enable, but it was not the updated version and it would not update automatically, even with the router bypassed, firewall turned off, and anti-virus disabled.
When I ran PBsetup.exe, then PB would not enable again, even with the above commands.
Runnin Win98SE.
Could that be the problem?

i just open q3config.cfg and set manualy cl_punkbuster 1

Thanks for the reply. I tried that also, but it will still not enable.
When I then close out the game, cl_punkbuster 1 reverts back to 0.

right-click on yer q3 config file and see if it says read only,if it does simply uncheck it.
do this to every q3config file that you have.
also if you must be an admin of your windows to do this,if you are on a restricted or guest account it will not let you change it.

I am on my own PC as administrator (the only user) and all my q3config.cfg files are checked as Archive and I can change the properties.

i ran 98 for a few years while i played q3,so i dunno.
maybe someone else can help you.sorry
*edit maybe the new pb setup isnt made for use with win98??

I appreciate your time and suggestions.
I also think that it may be the 'new' PB program that is causing the problems I am experiencing on my Win98SE system.
There is probably a simple solution, but I have put too many hours into this already (over 10).
I tried using EvenBalance's trouble-ticket on Apr25 and I haven't received a single response.
