Is there something good about Q4 MP?

Post by Clancy »

I played Q3 for years and years. Finally quit it so I could check out other FPS games but never stopped loving it, just got a little bored, you know? Quake 4 came out and I bought it, loaded it and thought: nah, this sucks, why would anyone ever play this this over Q3? It didn't seem better in any way.

Was I wrong? Should the project devs at Raven be taken out and shot? Or, am I an idiot who should just stfu and accept "progess".

I've been trying to get into Q4 but pub servers seem pretty empty. Maybe that's my answer, but I wanted to check with you folks.

The Q3 addict in me is pushing me to reinstall but is Q3 as dead or worse nowadays? I just want to find a time machine and set it for six years ago, and spawn inside a Three Wave map and have some real fun.

There are still many people playing q3, especially CTF. I think Raven did their best with q4, but in the end, it was id's fault to not develop their own games. It's easy to blame Raven, but I honestly think they did a decent job even though I don't play q4. I think q3 is the best video game engine ever created and that's why we still enjoy it to this day. I don't think it's dead, since so many people still play it :icon14:

I thought it was fun to play through Q4, but I treated it like I do most games...I continue playing Q3 and put it back in it's case. I'm a deathmatch player..and that's what kind of game Q3 is. I feel like if I play multiplayer in other games...it almost seems pointless..just makes me want to play the real deathmatch rather than playing a game that is about something else(Storyline&Missions), with a deathmatch(multiplayer) added on to it as another option like Serious Sam.

Q3 is always changing...not as fast these days, but it still is. In between 100 mods and near 2000 maps...there won't be another game like it. Not very boring if you dig into the guts of the game and get to know what can be modified and created from the ground on up with it.

Q4's system requirements were far too steep for me. SP was allright but for a real good MP experience it was far too slow.

I still play Quake 3 occasionally. I don't think it's dead.

its not dead, far from it, but it IS dying, and fast. Id give it another four years, maybe, before the only people left playing it are really bored former-pros that are lurking on a server waiting aimlessly for another former-pro to show up so that they can play a half-assed game together because they want to kill ten minutes.

That's definitely an opinion. I still play UltimateDoom, and what year did that come out? I don't even remember. I personally don't need other human opponents to keep it interesting..it's just as fun against bots..and the replay value in itself. I'll probably be playing it 10/20 years from now...since there is definitely not going to be another game with promode physics in it. I obviously will not be playing it as much as I have been for the last seven years..but still will be. I'm hoping within about two years I might finally figure out how to run my damn GTKRadiant program...it's all about the maps to me :icon25:

It's pretty cool, you get more control than Q3 so there's a little more mind in it

Pissants just hate it because their FX card runs too slow on it and desperately need to turn on full ambient to 'survive'.

Quake 4 is dead for me...i have tried it lots of times....maybe its bacause i have played quake 3 for too long...who know ?

But quake 3 is still the best experience online that i know.

And quake 3 is still on rank 6 of the most game play online...

Too bad the developers didn't learn anything from the past and made us jump through hoops just to find some obscure site that runs some obscure map v1.00000005 just to be able to connect to a server. I swear, 1 out of 3 servers in Q4 I could never connect at all. Fuck that, fix the fucking game or I ain't touching it... well, I haven't in months already

Its a shame cause you could see the devs have put additional months of work into the game to try and bring the MP up to a better baseline. Unfortunately the game's features and gameplay so far has barely equalled Q3 at release, and for a game 6 years down the line that just isn't enough.

Thanks for the replies so far, guys, good info. I have been reading comments in this forum since the end of the last century from some of you hardcore players, actually. I was never one to post comments myself, however.

Here's one of my fantasies: Id figures out that they can make a lot of money by developing Quake IV, and then they do a good job.

Foo, Duhard, and others, did make valid points about Raven's part in the development of Q4. Id screwed us fans, not Raven. I've been trying to play Q4 a bit more and now I see that the game is actually a well-made product that probably had a very strict budget, so game features and various other things that you'd have expected Id to include, Raven modified or left out. In some cases, totally fucked up. But, whatever. I'm looking for my Q3 CD now! lol.

Thanks.

well...I used to find that entertaining back in my Osp clan days years back, but I turned into a strong Cpma player. In the online community that developed over time most of us stopped acting like a bunch L33T geeks, and focused on building the player count by working together, along with teaching newbs and keeping the game going. The mod has always been changing, which makes it hard to get bored with.
If everyone was an ass to others, this game would have died a long time ago, but it hasn't. I'd rather see people have fun. :icon25: I've hated enough players over the years...I'm to good of a player to give a shit about small online quarrels. I just play....but I'm on dial-up these days so...it doesn't really matter. :p

man, the Q3 population is dwindling. CPL dropped any Quake-based game form their lineup, so now all the old-school Quakers i know i all bickering and shouting racial slurs in all caps. The whole setup has flown into anarchy...

hehe..yep, the good majority of them are the newbs that we taught. Apparently we didn't do a very good job. :puke: The last time that I played in a Cpma server, I and some others were hanging in a server with Apheleon and Putty..back before aph had a bot named after him... or was even well known, he was kickin my ass on cpm15. I learned a shitload from watchin and playing him...which changed my playing style. None of it included negativity.
Minded..I have a friend that has a good connection, and I played on his comp a couple times last year...and I really couldn't find anyone that offered me any sort of competition. Most people have always called me a bot..which is irritating, but If someone like me is an ass to them, no one will even play against me anymore...or bother to stay in the server. I wish I had a good connection....I need some blood donations :icon33:

I guess it isn't going to die soon. I just bought this game, and I was worried that it would die on me like battlefield vietnam (only BF game I liked). The main issue is that there aren't going to be many new players. This is a 7 year old game, that is seen by most as a classic. I doubt that there will be many newcomers who will try to get their hands on such an old game, and then be active in it, for the same reason I was worried of its death. Ironic, don't you think?
