How do I turn off chat ?

Is there any way to turn off chat in Quake 3 ? I realy don't want to hear what bullet fodder has to say and the pre-programed crap that the bots puke up is a stupid waste.
I can't believe that the number 1 FAQ is not "How do I turn off the god damn chat ?", but I can't seem to find it.
