Used to have people ask me about that possibility all the time when I was running a swimming pool...everyone that asked had, at the time, apparently heard of some horror story where a kid was completely disemboweled by a drain at the bottom of a pool.
The story has been picked up by the AP. I don't think its bullshit, but drains are supposed to be designed to protect from things like that.
I thought the stories were urban legends back when I heard them 12 years ago.
Like the urban legend of the chemical that turns color when someone pees in the pool. I can't believe people still believe that exists. Had a student argue that he had actually seen it work, so I really wonder what was going on when they were peeing in the pool and seeing color. Maybe bloody urine.

I know. His argument (and one I hear a lot) is that there is a pool additive that will make a red cloud around someone who pees. The guy at the pool chemical place I used said he got requests for it all the time by people who had just bought a pool or hot tub.
And some would also argue with him about KNOWING that this pee detector dye existed, and that they would just call some other store that had someone working there who knew pools better than this guy.

snopes is handy.
but if you are referring to the first article on this thread, I don't think its a hoax:

But it could be.

ugh, the cover over the drain had been removed, and they looked in the pool filter and found her small intestine in there. Sausages, anyone?
