That story is plainly bullshit.

Used to have people ask me about that possibility all the time when I was running a swimming pool...everyone that asked had, at the time, apparently heard of some horror story where a kid was completely disemboweled by a drain at the bottom of a pool.

The story has been picked up by the AP. I don't think its bullshit, but drains are supposed to be designed to protect from things like that.

Like the urban legend of the chemical that turns color when someone pees in the pool. I can't believe people still believe that exists. Had a student argue that he had actually seen it work, so I really wonder what was going on when they were peeing in the pool and seeing color. Maybe bloody urine.

The chemical that changes the colour of the water when you pee in the pool is conjugated bilirubin. It's the yellow stuff in wee.....

I know. His argument (and one I hear a lot) is that there is a pool additive that will make a red cloud around someone who pees. The guy at the pool chemical place I used said he got requests for it all the time by people who had just bought a pool or hot tub.

And some would also argue with him about KNOWING that this pee detector dye existed, and that they would just call some other store that had someone working there who knew pools better than this guy.

Maybe he was colourblind and thought the green tinge of urine plus chlorinated water looked the same as red?

Or he could have just been full of shit and figured if he told me he saw it work I would stop telling him the stuff didn't exist.
