US PS3 drops to $500

$500 for a BluRay player... tempting. MS might drop the 360 by $100 @ E3.

Well, from what people have been saying online, its still not a good thing.. No idea HOW its not a good thing, any money off is a good thing in my eyes...

But MS already stated if and when the PS3 gets a price cut, they will be there straight after with one on the 360.

TBH, they would be utterly amazing to drop the 360 down to £220 in the UK, and get rid of the core system. Just fucking bin the thing, nobody wanted it anyway...

Yeah the price got cut, but I had to take them off of our shelves today for w/e reason... Can't put them back up till Thursday.

I don't think it will make all too much of a difference. I think we've only sold 2 ps3s from the third shipment we got after they were released...

I'd rather see a price drop on the hd dvd drive than the core system.

This will probably be enough to get me to buy a PS3 now.

It looks like MS is dropping the core and premium 360 by $50 and the elite by $80 tomorrow.

But of course...
Microsoft is still keeping its plans under wraps. "Microsoft has not made any announcements regarding a price cut on Xbox 360," a rep told Next-Gen in an e-mail today.

From what I've seen, most games don't look that much, if ANY, better on the PS3, and many games look worse. is the ps3 hardware really as superior to the 360 as was advertised?

Superior? No. Different.

Wonky architecture with split processing and such means you have to build games in a different way, which is dumb in a time when developers are depending on making extra cash with easy ports between platforms. And with the 360/PC unification that's gradually coming along, and Nintendo just flat out fucking off into leftfield and doing their own shit, PS3 is in an odd situation.

You could get a more complex game running on the PS3, potentially, as there's more power pound for pound in each unit than the 360. But since it's spread across a variable high number of individual cores, you have to produce a program which caters to this in an optimal manner. Dunno if anyone's figured out exactly what that would look like yet.

I love Xbox Live and the 360's Dashboard. Unless the PS3 can compete in those categories, I'll probably pass.

getting the most out of the 360 requires synchronising at least 3 threads .. so it already differs from the pc in all but the direct x api ;)

It seems like the PS3 could get away with having the best in A.I., physics, and other processor intensive tasks. But its graphical processing power just doesn't seem as prominent.

there is only so much you can parallel code for video games which makes the cell's GFLOP peak potential far from ever being used in a game
the 360 simply has the better gaming cpu and gpu

Blah, the core to fall from... I just keep thinking "Just fucking ditch the thing".

There is a single reason why the core still sells. MS's fuck ups with banning and breaking. Thats why. You buy a core, use all your old stuff, done...

But that would mean the Core system in the UK would be around about, if not cheaper, than the price of a Wii...

And thats seriously gonna ruffle some feathers... Do you want a "out of date game cube" or a "next gen system"? (Not what I think, but thats what "kids" will think).

You can buy a 360 to play GTA 4 on, for less than £200, or a PS3 to play GTA 4 on with the same damn game experience, for £150 more.

Whats worth it...? Keeping in mind if you get the Prem system which looks like it will be about £250 uk, you can also buy the extra exclusive missions the PS3 version wont get...

I hope so, and I hope its multi platform. Silent Hill next gen could look and play stunning.

SH2/3 are still 2 of the best looking games around even today.
