The dog I grabbed off of the street today

Post by tnf »

Found this piebald daschund (think that's what it is) out in the street today running between cars then back to the sidewalk then back to the street. No tags, the collar is one I put on him so I could walk him around and see if anyone in the area recognized him or if anyone was looking for him. No luck yet, but this dog is immaculately behaved and trained so I'm guessing someone is looking. If not, then I guess I've got a new addition to the family. :icon8: :paranoid: He looks peaceful here, but that's after I ran him for about 45 minutes doing interval sprints/jog/sprint stuff to tire him out.

Don't know that I could just drop this one at the pound. Do any of you own dogs or cats that you picked up as strays?

almost had a dog of the same type...err, as far as looks go anyways. Don't know much about what type is what.

But after a few days of seeing him walking around he stumbled his way upstairs onto my level of the complex. Went to the fridge to feed him what me and g/f made the night before. After eating the leftovers he went on his way, and ive yet to see him since. :olo:

Had it not been 7am after the the first day of a down I might have brought him in. seemed like a decent enough pet.

pretty markings.

i've had a few stray cats become family members at my house. the first was a stray black cat with long hair that showed up at my neighbors house around halloween as a kitten. my neighbor called us cuz she knew we liked animals and we took it in worried that some teenagers might find it and do bad things seeing as it was so close to halloween and it was a black cat. around the same time we actually had someone around the area that was killing cats and dumping them off a the local middle school so that was even more cause for worry.

then we had a tuxedo cat my sister found down in eugene as a kitten while in college that we somehow ended up with. it was a fucking awesome cat until it died of a urinary tract infection. he never let on that he was sick at all.

then there's an orange cat that someone brought into my parents business many years ago as a kitten that was dodging traffic on an extremely busy road. we aptly named him the street he was rescued from but he turned out to be a complete ass. he attacked the long haired black cat all the time so we threw him outside. now he just hangs around the house and we still feed him but he never comes indoors. he chirps like a bird instead of meowing. though i've never seen a normal orange haired cat to be honest...

Yeah, call the local wardens. I took in a dog once that was a couple of miles from home. The owners called in and we were able to meet up that night.

not that I didnt respect you in the first place, but that level of respect has just gone up a couple more notches..

doesnt it make you feel good, that in a world full of uncaring assholes, you are still doing the right thing.

Yea, that's the plan today. I'll keep it for a couple of days at least to find the owner. If no luck (I'm guessing someone is looking for it though), then I will look into giving the dog to a few people I know who have voiced a lot of interest in taking him in if nobody claims it. If that falls through, I'll keep it.

When I was a kid, I had 2 different dogs get lost and run over. I remember how much that sucked, so every time I see a dog and think about just ignoring it I think about the fact that there is probably some person completely out of their mind with worry and a small inconvenience on my part can potentially save them from the horrible feeling of losing a family pet for good. Of course, many owners probably don't have the amount of concern that I project, but oh well.

I kept a st.bernard pup that just walked up to the house I was living at years ago for a night. Found the owner the next day and she said that the dog was a member of the family, and her husband was in the air force and had to fly out the germany that morning and he had left in tears because there was still no word on the lost dog. She gave me $200 for keeping it over night, but I gave it back to her because I want to keep my karma in the positive in case a similar situation ever happens to me.

because its apparent from my post that i'm not trying to find the owner, right?

but thanks for the predictable insight

edit: took the dog to have it checked for a chip, and it did have one. was able to get a hold of the owner (who lived about 30 minutes by car from where I found the dog) and the dog is now back with his family. So that turned out well.

This one time my girlfriend left the backdoor to my old place open and the wind blew it open. I have two cat's and one was still a kitten at the time.

When I got home from work that night, one cat was missing, and the other had crapped himself. There were two stray's in the house who had taken ownership while I was gone. Needless to say, I was less than pleased and those two strays found out that just because there was an easy way in didn't mean there was an easy way out.

I'm pretty sure I scared the living crap out of them (litteraly) and I made sure they found the way out... through the window. I was less than kind.

Luckily my other cat returned later that night. :)

These are the little critters, the one in the back is huge, can't tell from the pic but that cat is almost 20 pounds.

That's great, tnf, I'm so glad you took him in and made the effort to find his owners before he became roadkill on the highway. One time a big gray cat showed up at my house and was hanging around eating with the outdoor cats. I caught him and looked him over, he had a tag on but the phone number was pretty faint. I figured it out and called, I described the cat to the woman and she came over to get him. He had been gone for 6 months, she lived about 5 miles away up on a hill. I was amazed that he was on the road that long and nobody ever tried to read his tag and call her. He was obviously tame and really hungry.

tnf, it's pretty clear you're getting attached to that dog. Hopefully you'll be able to keep it as it sounds like a wonderful pet :)

When I was about 4, a black cat wandered into our apartment building in Finland and stayed with us for about a week before running off, probably back to its owners.
I personally have two cats at the moment, both adopted. They used to bicker and fight constantly for the first two years, but now only do it when one or the other is hungry.

But before the cats, we tried adopting a German shepherd from the humane society. The poor dog was insane. He had most likely been abused badly by his previous owners and even had a broken ear. He flipped out and barked non-stop for two days before we called the guy to take him back. He told us it's normal since he was the only person the poor dog felt comfortable and safe with.
