UK PAYG Smartphone

Post by Foo »

O herro.

Since I'm a cheap bastard, I've got a ~6 year-old mobile phone. Even I'm prepared to admit that it could use an update now. I've been looking at this as it's fuck cheap for the features, and nice and open and stuff compared to most mobiles:
http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/uk/en/sm ... 70259.html

I don't need anything too posh, but for £160 quid for a camera, pda, mp3 player, voip handset, wifi-enabled smartphone seems like a good deal to me.

What I'm not sure on and what is not specified in most PAYG sim deals is whether you can access GPRS/EDGE with them, and what the charges are

ps I know the cam is crap res, and the phone is designed for business users. I'm finding more and more that business-oriented hardware is way, way better than stuff targeted at home users. Outside of that, and the likely chronic overpricing of GPRS access, and the lack of 3G, any thoughts?

speaking of gadgets, drop me a PM next time you're selling an old but still good SLR camera at an insane discount. i'm kind of regretting not taking up your £300 offer on that last one a few months back, especially since mine's a 3.1mp POS that i can't seem to take a decent pic with

I need to start thinking about this shit soon too. I can't wait for the housing market to slump forever. Still convinced that it will do so though, but am I prepared to wait 5-10 years before buying my first home? Now is a shitty time for first buyers.

i really wonder if a slump will come of just maybe stagnent with a slight increase for a term.

i'm almost positive i wont see the price of a "average" decrease.

however i been seeing some very slight softening in the very high end stuff.

prolly sofen more on the high if interest rates hit double digits like the early 90's

Hmm, I think I'm gonna leave this phone for now. If HP comes out with a new version with a better screen, and maybe a proper nub thing for mouse control or something, or a touch screen, this thing will be a winner. But as it stands it's lacking a bit. Shame though, the price is great and the features are solid, it just needs a few changes to make it 'perfect'.

Well a week and a half later - It's on order.

My old mobile is now on its last legs and I'm charging it daily even though the battery is ~2 months old, sod it.

There's a good chance I can get this working with our office SIP box, too.
