It was december 1962, in the Jura mountains in France. Our expedition, under the courageous leadership of Francois Balfour, (famous contemporary artist and de facto leader of the Cubist Movement) set it as a goal to paint the entire eastern mountain side of extinct volcano peak Y256 in a shade of deep purple. It took many weeks of preparations, calculations and no less then five general repetitions to get our act together. We meticulously anticipated every detail but even then the whole thing nearly turned into a logistical nightmare of apocalyptic proportions… but after three long weeks we were finally successful in setting up a base camp at 2354 meters and installing the giant diesel powered pumps we’d need to get the paint up there.

The painting itself was done by seven painter teams each comprised of seven art students of the Sarbonnes University, who worked around the clock to meet the horrible deadline we set ourselves. Oh how they struggled in their arctic mountain climbing gear, holding on for dear life to the giant hoses that delivered the paint. We would scream instructions through the primitive communication system while surveying their work and they would listen and obey – and soon the entire eastern side was exactly as we envisioned it, deep purple.

But as we stood back and took out our binoculars and telelens equipped cameras and easels and notebooks to document our project, it started snowing… it was the greatest expression of art I ever saw. Within minutes our hard work was absolutely annihilated by mother nature and not a speck of purple was left, a great symbol of the futility of man’s work in the grand scheme of things.
