New system soon, but help, what OS? 32 or 64 bit?

Post by Whiskey 7 »

OK would normally ask in T&T but asking here for quick and many (I hope) responses.

Here briefly is the proposed System Configuration: ordering tomorrow I feel
_______________________________________
Intel S775 Core 2 Q6600 Quad-Core CPU on a Gigabyte S775 GA-P35-DS4 Core 2 Motherboard
DDR2 4GB Geil 800MHz Dual Channel DDR2 Kit

2 x 250GB Western Digital YS 7200rpm 16M SATA HDD (Note: 2 x 250 in Raid 0 for daily operation)
1 x 320GB Western Digital YS 7200rpm 16M SATA HDD (Data and Backup)

ASUS 8800GT 512M PCIe Video Card into a 24" Samsung 245B LCD Monitor
Antec Nine Hundred Black Case (No PS) but adding a Thermaltake 750 Watt Toughpower ATX Power Supply
LiteOn 20x DVD Writer SATA Black and yes 1.44M Floppy Disk Drive Black (had to have one-tradition I suppose)

MS Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit OEM

Now do I go for 32 or 64 bit given the choice? What would you opt for?

I am mainly into 3d FPS shooters :tear: all from the original :q1: days. God technology has advanced !!
I can't get into 3rd person stuff.

Oh, sorry one more question. Cooling. Do I need additional coolers or are stock ones sufficient today given I don't OC?

Cheers & thanks

You will be fine with stock cooling,

i am running Vista 64-bit at the mo, and i can play all the older games without an issue, the 32-bit emulation is Great.

p.s. You would have gotten this responce from me in TNT, i am in both places whenever i get here...... wanker.

Why only one sata drive for data and backup?
I just use a USB floppy drive.

no problem, be for warned though, the Quad's run hot ( ya know, Four hot cores, small piece :) ) so hitting well in the 60C's is not unheard of.

I hear 256 bit is around the corner. I'm going to wait to upgrade my quantum computer.
