PC shop just called...........

Post by Whiskey 7 »

OK my local PC shop just called........... to say the 8800 GT was not available and are offering a 8800 GTS (apparently the new 512Mb one released today?) on my new PC build for not too many dollars more...

New PC configuration
* Intel S775 Core 2 Q6600 Quad-Core CPU
* Gigabyte S775 GA-P35-DS3R Core 2 Motherboard
* DDR2 4GB Geil 800MHz Dual Channel DDR2 Kit
* 1.44M Floppy Disk Drive Black Yes just had to have one - What a waste
* 3 x 320GB Western Digital YS 7200rpm 16M SATA HDD 24x7 in RAID 5 Configuration
* ASUS 8800GT 512M PCIe Video Card* 24" Samsung 245B LCD Monitor
* Antec P182 Performance One Case (No PS)
* Thermaltake 750 Watt Toughpower ATX Power Supply
* Mouse & KB
* LiteOn 20x DVD Writer SATA Black
* MS Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit OEM Yes going 64 bit - Wish me luck

So for a dumb ass like me what is the difference in the 2 video cards?

The new GTS is the same chip as the GT, but with the remaining processor goodies turned on. I haven't seen any test results but it should be a good step above the GT.

That being said... I don't know that you need better than the GT for the time being, so it's just a matter of "worth it" to you. On the other hand, GTs have consistently been sold out everywhere.. so if you can get your hands on the new GTS instead... that probably tilts the scales pretty heavily toward worth it.

edit - I hadn't noticed the new GTS was released today, but it is indeed in stock at newegg for roughly $50-80 more than the GT.

NCIX still has the XFX 8800GT XT in stock.

http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php? ... acture=XFX

Was $10 cheaper when I bought it :drool:

You guys are talking about the brand new GTS built on the new G92 chipset that the GT uses as well, right? Otherwise there's also another new GTS that uses the same old G80 but has unlocked some stream processors to match the GT at 112. It still doesn't beat the GT though.

I think so :smirk:

I am really not sure here but am advised this card is out today?

Based on GT technologies but much better (10% maybe) improvement in performance (depending on what you are measuring of course)

Anybody else got info here?

It will be appreciated :D

this should tell you pretty much everything you'll need to know. (and a lot you probably don't)

At first, I thought they were trying to rip you off since the GTS versions are typically slower than GTs. But I guess nVidia is just continuing with their overly complicated naming system.
8800 Ultra > 8800 GTS 512 > 8800 GTX > 8800 GT > 8800 GTS 640 > 8800 GTS 320
WTF? How is anyone supposed to figure this out on their own?

Nice system BTW.
