Warner Bros. goes Blu-Ray exclusive
Ouch. This is a huge loss for HD-DVD.

Re: Warner Bros. goes Blu-Ray exclusive
I would think that a lot more production companies have to jump on one band wagon or another for things to level out. Almost every new movie is still available on HD-DVD and Blue Ray.
Though you'd have to think that the battle is going to be lost by the inferior format, which is obviously HD-DVD. But you never know.

Bluray seems to be getting a lot more shelf space in uk stores from what I'm seeing.Doombrain wrote:seems to be leveling out now, i wonder if there will ever be one HD disk format.
Which is a shame, I'm rooting for HD-DVD.

How so. for a media which gives true lossless data stream how can either media be the inferior?YourGrandpa wrote:

before you open your mouth consider that HD DVD is cheaper to produce and isn't as easy to damage as BR disks are.

I'm not pulling for any, i'll just buy whatever comes out on top.Foo wrote:Bluray seems to be getting a lot more shelf space in uk stores from what I'm seeing.Doombrain wrote:seems to be leveling out now, i wonder if there will ever be one HD disk format.

PS. i bought Transformers HD from woolworths in the high street.
Re: Warner Bros. goes Blu-Ray exclusive
Only the audio portions have the option to be lossless, Dolby TruHD and whatever DTS's version is called. MPEG4 / h.264 are superior to MPEG2, but are still lossy video formats. Of course both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray support the same video encodings, so it really doesn't matter.Doombrain wrote:How so. for a media which gives true lossless data stream how can either media be the inferior?

Re: Warner Bros. goes Blu-Ray exclusive
I've only picked a side because of the impact blu-ray success would have on the AIDS that is PS3.

spoken like a true fanboy, not a good reason at all.
this has been a moment of" mentioning the obvious" with Tsakali, stay tuned our next subject will deal with 'why did the chicken cross the road'...don't miss it!

Re: Warner Bros. goes Blu-Ray exclusive
My understanding is that HD-DVD is an open standard, where BluRay is Sony proprietary. I may not be fully informed on that, but all other things being equal I will always support open standard over proprietary.
I didn't know that BluRay discs were more expensive to manufacture and easier to damage though.

Re: Warner Bros. goes Blu-Ray exclusive
it's down to the normal DVD production lines don't need to be replaced, just update the DVD burners to HD DVD. whereas BR production needs an entire new production line.
Re: Warner Bros. goes Blu-Ray exclusive
Toshiba et al. own the HD-DVD spec and Sony et al. own the BluRay spec. Neither is "open." Both are public knowledge, but have to be licensed to create content or players.
HD-DVDs can be manufactured in DVD facilities with relatively minor modifications. BluRay basically requires a new factory, IIRC.

Re: Warner Bros. goes Blu-Ray exclusive
I don't see why. I own a PS2 and that's the last console I've bothered with. The pure shit sony peddled for the PS3 was just plain poor decision making and if it's successful, it means they'll continue producing shite into the next console generation.Tsakali_ wrote:spoken like a true fanboy, not a good reason at all.

Re: Warner Bros. goes Blu-Ray exclusive
Blue Ray and HD-DVD are priced almost the same here. So cost isn't the issue. Blue Ray discs also hold more content, which gives credence to it's expansion capabilities over HD-DVD.
Personally I'm not a big fan of Sony because of their proprietaty nature. Nor do I own either format. But they have found a way to be competitive with their product.

Re: Warner Bros. goes Blu-Ray exclusive
does this mean Matrix will finally come to blu-ray?
Re: Warner Bros. goes Blu-Ray exclusive
That's too bad, I was pulling for HD-DVD. Still waiting for the dust to clear before making a purchase.
Re: Warner Bros. goes Blu-Ray exclusive
Around here, BluRay disks seem to be about $5 more on average than HD-DVD. Also, I think with 3 layer HD-DVDs their capacity is almost the same. 45 GB vs 50 GB or something like that. Either should be enough to get an entire 3+ hour movie like LotR on one disk with high bit rate video and uncompressed audio. So for me, the technology is a wash.YourGrandpa wrote:Blue Ray and HD-DVD are priced almost the same here. So cost isn't the issue. Re: Warner Bros. goes Blu-Ray exclusive
I'm hoping for HD-DVD to come out on top also. I can't stand Sony. Both formats are the same in image quality and sound. The only real difference is that Blu-Ray can hold a cunt hair more data. You can bet that Sony will fill that extra space up with extra copyright protection. HD_DVD has already been cracked and can be ripped already.
Oh and by the way, production lines don't "burn" discs... they stamp them out with a nickel press kinda like old vinyl records.

Re: Warner Bros. goes Blu-Ray exclusive
Don't forget HD-DVD is region free.

I don't see how denouncing a shitty Sony product like the PS3 labels Foo a "fanboy"Tsakali_ wrote:spoken like a true fanboy, not a good reason at all.

I wouldn't support HD-DVD if it could only be used by a specific brand. In the end of the day, universal format beats being corporate-specific. Fuck Sony's bullshit.
Re: Warner Bros. goes Blu-Ray exclusive
the blue ray as a product might be a good thing for this market yet to bash it due to implications is wrong ...mmmkay
anyway it doesn't matter if it's a shit product that's one thing
