While playing crysis, some serious artifacts started to show up and my computer just rebooted after hit the quit button on a "not responding" vista message. The monitor wouldn't show anything, and the little on/off button would just stay orange as if it wasn't plugged into my graphics card. However, after like 5 mintues of turning it on and off constantly, it eventually showed the Asus boot screen and Vista 64 started normaly.
I don't know what could be wrong since Speed Fan shows a System temp of 41c, CPU at 24c, and Nvidia drivers show the GPU at 75c 10 seconds after full load. All in all, I'd say my pc runs fairly cool.
Q6600
4GB DDR2 800
8800GTS 512
Asus P5E LGA 775 X38
Vista 64
errr... I just rebooted, but this time I turned on my secondary 23'' LCD (I was playing 360 on it) and it seemd to display everything fine. Once my Vista completely load, my primary 17'' displayed the desktop. So... aparantly, my secondary monitor becomes my primary when I'm booting, and it switches back over when everythign is loaded.
Black Screen on startup
Re: Black Screen on startup
anything in the event logs?
i know they say 75c is ok but imo it's to hot. after awhile all the ram/mosfets and vrm overheat from the hot core.
use riva tuner and ramp the fan speed up and try.
i had all sorts of cooling problems with my 8800gt. i ended up ripping the coolor off and putting an hr-o3-gt with a low rpm 120mm fan strapped to it. quiet and cool now.

Re: Black Screen on startup
within 10 seconds the GPU fan can take up to 20C out.
download and run the ATItool, dont clock it, just run it and keep an eye on the temps.
if they are getting around 80C ( and i would be willing to bet they are mid 80's ) then there is your issue.. you will need to look into getting the temps lower, or calling the manufacturer and getting a RMA for the Videocard, if it is a decent brand they will ship you a replacement card and when you recive it you send out your current card so you are not out of a computer. they Do however require a Creditcard for this to happen, but its usually the best way.

Bahh.. is this "automatic fan control" actually doing anything? I just checked my temps with auto fan, and it says 29% fan @ 77C during crysis.
edit: I guess not..

Then I manually set the fan to 70% and got 62C. I guess im keeping it manual.techspot wrote:As we suspected, although the GeForce 8800 GTS 512 features a nice big dual slot cooler, the fan never spins up when under load, so the temperatures keep climbing till they hit just over 80 degrees.

That would be best.
Re: Black Screen on startup
Also, would a bios update do any good? I got a disk with the mobo, but I doubt its the latest version.

Re: Black Screen on startup
the Shipping bios is 107,
they are up to 502 now, and they have Fixed the following:
P5E BIOS 0203
1. Add uCode to support new processor
2. Support JMB368 S3 Freeze Lock
3. Support adjusting DDR voltage under AI Suite
P5E BIOS 0303
1. Support new CPUs. Please refer to our website at: http://support.asus.com.tw/cpusupport/cpusupport.aspx
2. Update EIST control code
3. Enhance PCIE card compatibility
P5E BIOS 0401
1. Support new CPUs. Please refer to our website at: http://support.asus.com.tw/cpusupport/cpusupport.aspx
2. Update EIST control code
3. Enhance PCIE card compatibility
P5E BIOS 0402
1. Add online instruction on how to adjust CPU and DRAM voltage settings
2. Enable support to control the support capability of device S3 USB wakeup function
and finally:
P5E BIOS 0502
1. Finetune CPU temperature detection algorithm
So, if you have any of those issues, then for sure or you plan on Clocking the computer then go for it, else, leave it be.
