Quake shareware CD errors

[I cant spell u]

I've been attempting to run the quake shareware cd, but when I do I get "Divide by zero or overflow error" the first attempt. Any attempt afterwards I get this error "the win 16 subsystem has insufficent resources.." Any assistance would be greatly appreciated
