8800GTX on Vista - known issues with Auto Cooling?

Post by mik0rs »

As usual the title says it all. I picked up a 768MB GeForce 8800GTX a couple of months ago and I've noticed a few temporary lock ups playing games, just a total freeze. The fan control is on automatic but I can never hear it actually ramping up, the fan just seems to stay at its default speed, one solution that pretty much works is to manually bump it to 100%, that knocks the temperature at load to even lower than when I'm outside of a game using auto control...

So anyway, that's how I'm getting around it atm, I think I'm missing one of the 3 hotfixes so that will go in tomorrow but it doesn't seem to make any mention of fan control. So I'm wondering if anyone else has cooling problems on similar spec* cards?

*Similar spec = one that hogs a PCI slot with its fucking ma-hoos-ive fan.

unless you want to go to a third party cooler you might be stuck with ramping the fan speed up. re-doing the thermal paste might fix it.

are you using riva tuner for fan speed? it works good for xp but it won't load at startup with vista unless you turn uac off.

there are bios editors that let you set fan speeds for the gtx if you wanna go that route.

a few games my 8800 wont really spin up, and the damned thing gets hot.

i've manually set the ran to 85% at all times for that reason.

shadd_: I did use it before after it started overheating but I get what I need (fan-speed-wise) from nTune so I've installed that now, I've not bothered seeing if that runs after a reboot but UACs turned off so it should.

Amidy: I was running it comfortably enough at about the same fan speed so that's what I'll do so I get some compromise on noise and performance. That said, even on 100% it's quieter than my old PC so I'd get used to it either way.

Anyways, thanks both
