The XFX GeForce 9600GT

Post by The_Leo »

So I am thinking of buying the new nVidia 9000 series card, the GeForce 9600GT to be more specific. From XFX, naturally.
However, since I already have a 8000 series GeForce 8600GT from XFX, would I be able to run the 9600 and the 8600 in SLI?
When you are running SLI, do they absolutely have to be 2 exact same cards?

Otherwise I will have to sell the XFX GeForce 8600, and I had it for less than a year...
Am I glad I didn't buy the 8800.

The 8600 is fucking wank though man. That 9600 will run games at least twice as fast.

The 8800 stomps the 9600.

If you want more power, save up for the
?800 cards in your target generation. You can keep one longer than the ?600 before you'll have to upgrade.

Stomps?

No, really it dont.
the 8800GT "barely" beats it out in most testing.

I just went through the "8800GT/9600GT" thing with my new build. I went 9600. The 8800 was 50+ More in most cases, and only 2% faster in most tests. And the 9600GT does beat out the 8800GT in a few tests anyways. The cards are pretty even honestly.

links?

the 9600 may perform better or worse depending on the mobo.

a mobo with linkboost(nvidia mobo)will overclock the pci bus, upping the multi(pci/4)of the gpu. so your card will be overclocked without you knowing. overclocking tools will still show inaccurate standard clocks.

this will happen with any mobo that has the pci bus beyond 100mhz.

something to think about. personally, i want to know whats going on with my hardware. the 8800gt is still best bang for buck.

Not a huge fan of toms but its a pretty good review.

Basicly, 9600GT beats EVERYTHING 8800GT (256 meg) And under. While it holds its own against the 512 8800GT.

Yes, the 8800GT at the end of the day "wins" at fuck all huge resolutions. But some of us dont play at fuck all huge resolutions. :D For most of us people the 9600GT makes more sense, and is a better card.

The HDMI combined with the lower price is what sold me over the slightly lower performance. The biggest problem with video cards right now, and I'm pretty sure this is on purpose, is the versioning/pricing strategy. Its so easy to start off with a vanilla 8800 GT and then keep stepping up for "oh its just another $10 for more speed, therefore a better value" until the next thing you know you're so far beyond your budget but it doesn't seem like it.
