I think I'll have to pick one of them up as soon as the new 9-inch series comes out.

I've got one of them for the weekend and so far, it's been amazingly useful. Fast enough to do 85% of what you'd normally do on a computer, and small enough so that you don't actually consciously feel like you're carrying around a computer amidst textbooks and journals and what-have-you.
I think I'll have to pick one of them up as soon as the new 9-inch series comes out.

Re: So those Eee PCs...
Yeah the bigger screen is gonna make it a lot more attractive. The spakky little one on the current generation is pretty poor.
Might make a good download station when hooked up to a USB drive, too.

The bigger screen version will be going for $600, too expensive IMHO. Doesn't matter; I'm more than happy with my smaller screen Eee.

It seems pretty cool, but I wouldn't spend $300 for one of the mid-range models unless the screen was bigger.

OK, so now it appears the price point will be $500:

Re: So those Eee PCs...
That's not a bad price at $500, I'll definitely be interested in picking up one of the better Linux varieties, perhaps installing my own distro. I was expecting the 9" one to be larger than the current ones (which would detract from the whole point of the Eee's ultra portablility) so I'm glad that it will remain the same size.
A friend showed me his Eee, and I'm quite surprised about the build quality. It feels really solid for what it is.

Re: So those Eee PCs...
I would buy one, but they have been sold out since the first day.
Which 9" version to get for 499$:
12 Gb with Linux, or 8 Gb solid state with XP?

Re: So those Eee PCs...
or wait for them to use 2.5" HDD's, buy it, and a little later on swap a bigger HDD in... rather then being jammed with a SSD...

I read somewhere that it's not possible to install other OS's then the pre-installed one. Surely this is not something unattainable, but I'm no hacks0r.Foo wrote:Surely get the Linux they put XP on yoself
Re: So those Eee PCs...
Get the 8 GB drive. Do you really need the space for a laptop? If you do, surely an external USB hard drive will suffice.saturn wrote:I would buy one, but they have been sold out since the first day.

Re: So those Eee PCs...
No, my friend's Eee came with the Asus Xandros OS, and he installed XP on himself. There's other guides out there for installing (X)Ubuntu as well. I'd be interested in installing Ubuntu and then FTP files to and from my server.saturn wrote:I read somewhere that it's not possible to install other OS's then the pre-installed one. The only concern I have is that I've heard about multiple re-writes being bad for the flash memory and wonder how that will affected it long term. Better off waiting for 2.5" HDD, or will that increase the weight significantly?

Well the Asus EEEs are nice, and more portable and cost effiecient than the Apple Air, but the Apple Air is paper fucking thin guys!!!!! Can't beat that now can you. I mean the Asus EEE may be more practical, and smaller so you can fit more places, but it isnt as thin!!!!

Why buy a Honda when you can buy a freakin Ferrari? That's hardly the same price category, one being $300-500 and the other at $1900-3250.

Re: So those Eee PCs...
Just pointing fun at Apple's oggling of the world's thinnest laptop, achievable by not having a CD drive. I've just grown tred of hearing all the mac people near me saying how amazing the Air is, I just don't see it as being all that practical. I find the EEE much more practical.
