After a new Vid Card...9800 GX2 or 3870X2???

Post by E:v:O »

I currently have an 8800GT, which tbh I'm regretting buying; I'm gonna put that one in my Study PC for the Kids to play on, so I'm looking for a new card.

Benchmarks say it all in favor for the 9800GX2, but I dont feel too inclined spending all that cash for whats basically a jumped up 8800 GTX SLI.
3870X2 has Great benchmark results too, it's not a patch on the 9800GX2, but it's VERY reasonably priced.

What shall I do?
I've never been a fanboy of either NVIDIA or ATI, I just want a decent card that will see me through the next 12 months, basically what I'm saying is, which one would I regret buying the most once a newer card comes out?

Currently I'm tempted to go for the 3870X2....but meh.
Ideas plz?

If you're going to regret buying a card every time a better one comes out, you'll never be happy. Also, If you're going to replace it once a year, go for the cheaper one.

No I only regret buying the 8800GT cause I had an 8600GT that burned out about 2 months ago and I had to get a new card quick.
Also, getting a new card because I've been promising the kids a new vid card for a while now, their computer has a shitty onboard chip.

Well anyway, opted for the ATI card cause it's considerably cheaper and has dx 10.1.

On a side note, why are ATI cards so unpopular these days? I'm searching for new parts (I'm a bit out of the hardware loop, haven't built a new comp in a few years), and I've noticed so far that everybody opts for Nvidia cards.

It's just that as far as performance goes in the last couple of generations of GPU's, nVidia has been beating down ATI with a 2x4. It was the reverse a few years ago when nVidia had the 5000 series cards.

Couldn't you have just SLI'ed with another 8800GT?

wouldn't other components bottlneck it making SLi pointless?

What is considerably cheaper btw? I'm considering replacing my two 7300GT cards soon.

Maybe you're right about the bottle necking, although if he can run a 9800GX2, shouldn't he also be able to optimally run 2 8800GTs?

3870X2 costs about 75% of what a 9800GX2 does.
I wouldn't let that difference be a deciding factor.
