I have a freind who is putting up a website and when he contacted the company hosting the site, they sent him some info, such as the username, password for the ftp site etc.
They also sent him something called "nameserver1 and nameserver2. I'm guessing this is for DNS. Does this stuff go on the server side of things, as in the hosting company?? IF so, why does he need to know.
I guess he needs to enter this information someplace, but I have no idea. ANy help welcome

This is typical if your friend is using a web host company that provides just the hosting and does not handle the domain side of things.
So your friend orders a domain (say mydomain.com) from another company like http://www.godaddy.com or (my preference) http://www.stargate.com. Your friend then logs onto stargate.com and uses the control panel to set up DNS info using the ip address and nameservers that he got from the hosting company.

Yes he did buy his domain name from joker.com or somthing like that. He is using a local company to host the site, but not to make the site.
So is this nameserver thing something he needs to call the hosting company about? I assume that they [the host company] figures he should be able to do it because they sent him the info.
I dont really understand because they are hosting the site. What does it matter where he bought the name from?

joker.com is where he bought the domain.
so every time someone types in joker.com in their browser, how does it eventually go to his site? first, the browser looks up who owns the site. it'll see that joker.com owns the site. so then it asks joker.com where the site is located. this is where that DNS information comes it. joker.com will give the browser the DNS info, and from there the browser will see where the site is really hosted and will be able to go there to get all the html pages and stuff.
joker.com should have a control panel that he can log onto to add this DNS info. if not, it's a shitty domain company, so you'll have to give them a call. they'll know what to do when you call them up.
