Wireless Routers.
I've been out of the game for a little bit,
for the past wile, i've been using a Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 As a 802.11G AP, And a Via Mini-Itx board running Pfsense ( BSD ) As a router.
And i have to say, i love the performance. Not having to reboot the router...ever, making it aggressivly make sure its connected via PPPOE, QoS, Remote access ( to the GUI, VPn, Shell, whatever )
But from a Cost standpoint ( power Consumption and etc ), and a Component wise, it's just not worth it.
So i'm looking into getting Home-based router that has some punch to it and some of the features,
does anyone have and suggestions?
i was looking at the Linksys WRT150-N, but the component list isent that impressive at all.. its got a 266Mhz CPU compaired to my 200mhz Proc in the Buffalo, and they both have 16MB of ram and 4mb's of flash.

Re: Wireless Routers.
another router that has caught my eye is the Asus WL-500GP V2,
a friend of mine has the 500GP and its honestly a decent router, the only issues that i have with it is in stock form its GUI is rather well... clunky.
applying DD-wrt fixes that, but then the NAS/HTTP/FTP/Bit-torrent features of the router are gone.
*NAS can be setup, but i dont think it can be setup though a USB HDD enclosure*
edit: you can do NAS with DD-wrt.
http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/USB_storage
And it has a Broadcom4712&4704 at 264mhz, 32megs of ram, and a 8Mb Flash, though it dosnt have a Bi-AMP that the Buffalo has.
i guess i could put the Buffalo in the attic, and have it as an AP for extended range to fix that though.

Didn't you have a bunch of Linksys stuff?
I'm running a Linksys WRT54GL with DD-WRT. Works for me.

Re: Wireless Routers.
i have a WRT-G54 V4, and a Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 all running DD-wrt..
and you are right, they do work Just fine..
But i'm looking for a little more power in the router so i can do a little more with the routers.
Both of the above routers have Broadcom CPU's at 200mhz, 16mb of ram, and 4Mb of flash.
And when you enable QoS ( Mainly Voip ), Add some network traffic ( SMB shares ), and get some people on the net, the Cpu usige is around 60-70% and ram is 100% used.
Now Take away two of those items and toss in Torrents, and it basically becomes a one person Service. ( Cpu/ram/etc pegged at 90-100% )
And i'm itching for a NAS Box, But without the support of External interfaces ( except com ports ) the G54's cant help me, wile this router can, and it go's for the price of most (lower) Nas box's.
and running DD-wrt on it is always a welcome thing

Okay, I see. But what you're trying to do is far beyond what a normal home user would be doing so you'll likely be the person with the most expertise on this forum for your own question.
I've read some good reviews on the Asus WL-500GP but I don't have one so I can't give you my own opinion. If it's supported by DD-WRT, that sounds flat out awesome. If you do manage to get one, let me know how it works for you.

heh, you'd be amazed what power is in the little things and what you can do with them when you want to.
back at the subject at hand, yea, alot of the reviews are great for that router but i'm still not 100% sure.
Asus released there V2 of the router ( as i pointed out above ) and apparently its using a new Rev of the Boadcom CPU at 240Mhz rather then 266.. With the same Ram/Flash as well as the First revision.
So i'm sitting here wondering what the purpose of this is, and if i should get my mits on a V1 Wile i still can.

I can't help but feel that you're going to read about all these products only to throw your hands up in the air and solder an old PIII, 1GB stick of RAM, and a terabyte drive to your router and call it a day.

Re: Wireless Routers.
Zallright, This has been a Long weekend..
i went and got a Asus WL-500W Router, Great Feature set, supported by all the big names ( as i said above )..
Got it home, plugged it in and connected it to my main Box.
DHCP Went just fine, logged into the router. instead of giving me a login, it Had "WAN PORT DISCONNECTED! CHECK CABLES" in Large Bold red lettering.
So, F5 twice got me a login.
Logged in, and everything seemed to be fine.
Poked around and etc, but nothing to eventfull..
downloaded DD-wrt V24 RC7-Mini Asus Build, And Flashed the router.
Flash went ok, Refreshed it and was prompted with a welcome site of DD-wrt's info page.
Set a few things up, reboot the router 7 times, power cycle it twice and then moved it over to replace the Buffalo as the main router.
Connected everything ( 4 clients, 1 Wan PPOE ) and everything went ok, Then continued to go to my computer and download a few things wile monitoring the routers stats and etc.
then the traffic locked up, so i glance over to the router and the Wan, 1 and 2 lights and the 3,4 and Wlan lights are cycling in those Groups.
So what would you do? i power cycled it.. Bam.. Bricked...
Returned it, and got another one.
didnt even flash the thing, and it did the same thing( minus the Wan is disconnected prompt).
Grrr, so i returned that one and now i'm routerless.
i wonder if it was a bad build of them, or somthing...

Re: Wireless Routers.
Since we're on the topic of routers, a new version of DD-WRT (v24) has been released.
