9800Pro fan on the blink

Post by DRuM »

The fan occassionally stops and causes glitches all over the screen. :puke:

I removed the card and cleaned out all the dust and fluff build up on and between the fan blades and between the surrounding fins. It was fine for a few days but happened again today.

I removed the cover from my pc case while my pc was running, shone a torch inside and saw the fan wasn't moving.

I gave it a nudge with the torch and it started working again, and the graphical glitches started to quickly disappear. :)

Is there a way to remove the fan to clean it better or is it soldered on?
Is it a case of nothing can be done, buy a new gpu? :(

You can remove the fan and replace it with any number of aftermarket coolers. I've done that with my old ATI 9800 Pro All In Wonder. There are just little black pins holding the heatsink to the PCB, pop them out and then there is a little metal trim that you may or may not need to peel off to install the new cooler. Install the new card with some new silver thermal compound. It's hardly rocket science you know.

Thanks obsidian. So from what you're saying, there is no way to fix the fan, just replace the whole cooling unit right? Is it worth me spraying the fan with something? Maybe it just needs lubricating? Or maybe compressed air?

How do I know which aftermarket cooler will fit the 9800 pro?

If it's just dust, compressed air might help, but the small fans on the old ATI's are notorious for failure (the sleeves wear down and then they stop spinning freely thus needing replacement).

You'll know if a aftermarket cooler will work with your video card if your card is listed under the cooler's supported video card list, you dolt.

Thanks! How much do I owe you? :)
