Quake 3: Game stutters while holding key

It doesn't matter what key I hold down or where I do it -- the menu, the options, or the game -- but it completely freezes my graphics with 5-second stuttering and makes gameplay extremely difficult. Does anyone know I could fix it?

Depends on the cause. Does this happen in other games too? If you don't have other games installed, give Enemy Territory a spin - it's free.

I know it doesn't happen in Guild Wars.
