case fan setup
case fan setup
My case came with 120mm side and rear fans, both blowing out. I put another 120mm case fan in the front pulling air in, and have seen a lot of forums where people recommend side fans pull air in (along with the front fan) and the rear fan blow out. Those of you with 3 or more case fans, which way do you have them all oriented?
Re: case fan setup
Everything in except the one at the rear next to the processor, which takes air out.
My setup is 3x120mm fans at the front and an 80mm fan at the top. Two 100mm fans at the rear. Works pretty well but loud. I think the top fan is disabled along with one of the rear ones.
The general idea is to take air in at the lower front and expel at the rear top. This means the warmest air around the processor is taken directly out of the case.

Ohh no, here is one of the greatest arguments,
the answer is rather simple, Vacuum's are the Coldest things, so having the two rears blowing out, and having one fan sucking in would cause a vacuum..
there are quite a few articals on this, and they posted the resaults, and usually there is only 1-15C Difference in ambient temps ( depending on setup and case ).

Re: case fan setup
Creating a true vacuum in a case would be quite difficult.
I'm thinking what you are getting at is just that you want optimal airflow (via pressure differentials) to keep cool air moving over hotter system components to facilitate the transfer of heat from said components to the air that will be in turn heated and blown out the back of the case, right? I flipped the 120 mm side case fan to blow air in, so I have an input now on the front and side and then a 120mm output on the back (along with the PS fan). Motherboard temp readings have gone down 2-3 degrees C at idle and don't go as high at load either. To get better airflow I took out the hard drive cage that my case has (right at the bottom front directly behind where the front fan is) and moved the HDD up to one of the other 3.5" device slots where the floppy would have gone. I've been pleasantly surprised at the job that the stock HSF is doing on the processor.

Re: case fan setup
yeah, you got it..
in my case, i have a "tunnel" at the bottom for the HDD's and the PSU with a 120MM Blowing down, and a 120 in the pSu to exaust..
then in the Upper chamber, i have 2 120mm's above, and behind the CPU HSF blowing out, the 8800 GTS blowing out,
i dont have an input fan though, for the simple reason that i dont need one, the whole front of my case is Holes, and the air flow is insane

i forgot to mention, in the Tunnel, there are two raptors running Raid-0, they never get above 30C,
here is a side shot of the case, just to figure it out.. this site blocked the above CPU port.

that looks like a big case or is that a micro atx board?

Re: case fan setup
its a Mid ATX/BTX case, with a M-Atx case in it with a M-Pent4.
his goal was building a silent PC, and he did.. it was ~18DB @ 1M.

thats the offical Junk on it, mines the 180B ( B as in black, ) that is the only diffrence.

Re: case fan setup
Perhaps I didn't read that correctly, but what kind of PSU do you have that has a 120mm exhaust? That sounds impressive!AmIdYfReAk wrote:a 120 in the pSu to exaust..

Re: case fan setup
It's a 120mm fan mounted on the underside of the PSU and an exhaust grille across the back of the unit.

Re: case fan setup
I like my Antec Three Hundred case for it's air flow setup. It has two exhaust fans, one 120mm and one 140mm. It also has 6 meshes in the front of the case for intake flow. The PSU (550W PSU btw) fan is also a 120mm.
This thing practically blows out cool air, it's awesome.

Re: case fan setup
Antec PSUs can fuck off. I've gone through two of them in my lifetime, a 350W and a 450W, and both lasted for less than 3 months before their fans suddenly stopped working. Ended up damaging the mobo I had back then.
Re: case fan setup
I have an Antec 480W that's lasted a couple of months shy of 5 years.
Though for my next build, I want one of these unless something significant changes by then (Corsair HX620 modular cables) :

Re: case fan setup
Never had Antec PSUs personally, sorry I should've been clearer on that. I've always had Rosewill PSUs...probably a very underrated and unknown company, I love their stuff.
I do like my Antec case though, and yeah I've heard alot of horror stories about Antec PSUs too so I always stood clear of them.

btw, what motherboard is that frag?

My PS is a Rosewill. Nice chrome. Have all your Rosewills been reliable?nay0k wrote:Never had Antec PSUs personally, sorry I should've been clearer on that. I've always had Rosewill PSUs...probably a very underrated and unknown company, I love their stuff.

I haven't seen many setups with the PSU on the bottom.

The Antec Three Hundred has the PSU on the bottom as well.. I should take a picture of the inside, it looks real nice but there are no windows to see through like most cases these days do.
