I just want to make a comment about the obvious issue and that is the failure of Congress to act yesterday. Its just not acceptable. […] This is just a not acceptable situation. I’m not saying this is the perfect answer. If I were dictator, which I always aspire to be, I would write it a little bit differently.
I bet eleventy billion dollars that the fact that he admits he wants to be a dictator will put an absolute lock for him on voters who are authoritarian followers. Believe it or not, but they actually want to hear politicians say statements like that.
Obama won't do the crushing, but the result may ultimately be the same.
McCain's gaffes exude aloofness, disorganization and transparent desperation. If chest-beaters perceive him as weak consequently, he'll lose. The knuckle-dragging biblebots may also fall away, despite Palin.
When Bush said it back then it was an obvious joke because he was laughing...and followed it up with another joke while laughing. McCain didn't seem facetious at all in the video...at least that I could see.
At any rate, any time a right-winger talks about dictatorship people's ears should perk up while their hands reach for their firearms.

the article u linked to even says it was an obvious attempt at humour. Do you really think that if McCain wanted to be a dictator he'd admit it on air?
This was an attempt at straight faced humour - a more subtle kind than bush is capable of.
P.S. There are other videos available from that interview. I laughed my ass off with the video of him answering a question about his health benefiting from governement-funded healthcare.
“Throughout your adult life, am I right, as a veteran and a member of Congress and now someone over sixty five, throughout your adult life have you been covered by a taxpayer-financed health care plan?
It's hilarious...because - while defending "free market" healthcare - he admits that there was a time when he wasn't covered by "socialist" healthcare:
I did go a period of time where the healthcare wasn't very good.
