Good FTP Clients

Post by R00k »

I've been in need of a good FTP client recently. I used to use LeechFTP, which I loved, but that's been out of date for a long time.

I recently used a trial version of SmartFTP, which was okay but not stellar.

I mainly want it to quickly and easily upload large batches of files. LeechFTP was really good for this, giving you lots of options as to how many worker threads you wanted to use simultaneously, and the option for it to use your idle thread while uploads were running, then return it when they were done. SmartFTP was okay at the uploading, but the interface for queuing the files was a little clunky I thought.

Does anyone have a favorite client they use for this sort of thing? I'd obviously love a free one, but I don't mind paying a few bucks for it either, if it's worth it.

I was thinking about buying a license for SmartFTP so I could just unlock the one I have, but I thought I'd check around to see if there were any better ones out there first.

Thanks for any advice you can give.

Filezilla

Why pay? Free, open source, works fine for me. I'm not sure about the queueing and multithread thing, I have ever only just dragged and dropped a bunch of files in and let it do its thing.

Don't know anyone who doesn't use FileZilla these days.

Filezilla is the shit.

I've got this installed but never really use it:

You know, I'd heard of FileZilla before, but for some reason I thought it was limited to Apple/Linux/Unix.

Just downloaded the Windows version and I'm checking it out now.

So far it looks like this might be a good fit.

Used that for a while too, but I prefer Filezilla.

I've been using filezilla for so long that when I recently switched to linux, I had to go change my FTP password because I couldn't remember it.

Another vote for Filezilla here, although I'm currently trying FireFTP on my MacBook.
Both good and free though.

I gotta say, after working with it last night I'm sold. It's better than most of the FTP clients I've used that actually cost money.

Thanks for the recommendations fellas.

I find FTP Surfer easy to use. I have had the problem of not being able to overwrite files on the server, though, so having to delete them then upload the replacements instead. [Edit: It asks if I want to overwrite the file, I choose "Yes" but when it's finished uploading and I check, the file is still the old one (after a refresh and the cache is cleared)] I don't know if this is a problem with the server, though.

So I looked at a screenshot on the Filezilla site and the interface doesn't look good to me. Would I have the same problem with that program? I don't really want to try it but this problem needs fixing really. If someone was accessing my site during updates they would find things missing!

I just connect to the server, drag and drop files in and prompts me to overwrite. I haven't needed anything else since using Filezilla.

yep, you can drag and drop onto filezilla and it pops a window with about 5 options for overwrite/skip/overwrite all/skip all/andthelastoneisprobablycancelorsomethingorthere'sonly4

What would be the difference between "skip all" and "cancel"? :)

Anyway, my question was really: Is it a server problem that it's not overwriting the files when I tell it to or is it the program?. (That's with FTP Surfer.)

Why not just try Filezilla and answer your own question?

'skip all' would mean skipping all files that will normally prompt that dialog, while 'cancel' would mean stopping everything.

Didn't I make that clear? The UI looks sub-par.

I'm going to try FlashFXP.

You're judging from the screenshots?

There are 5 different UI themes to choose from after you install it, as well as 4 different screen-pane arrangements. You're only seeing one.

That's fine though - don't bother trying something that's almost unanimously recommended by tech savvy people here. You're sure to get the best product that way. lol
