all flames flames are frozen in q3

Hi all, i have a bug with my setup: all flames flames are frozen in all maps quake3.

Other symptoms are pickups "jigging" in steps when they move up and down, and other animated textures only displaying the main frames (ie not "smoothing" between frames).

I have an installation of openarea and that works fine.

Is there an easy way to fix it without reinstalling?

probably a custom map or mod has included a script for flames that is conflicting with the id software quake3 flame script.

backup and remove custom maps "pk3" and then test .. if no go .. backup and removes custom mods

looks like the issue is only with the ultrafreeze mod.

i gave it a try - moved all maps and custom mods out of the quake 3 directory - but the problem persists :P

Er, kinda - vanilla q3 works fine, but it's actually the mod that I want to play ; this is still broken. I'll check with the freeze guys over at freeze.co.nz

i've tried resetting the config files too with no joy

cl_timenudge set to a daft value. Set it to 0.

i gave setting the cl_timenudge to 0 a go (with a restart of q3 also)- problem persists.

can we assume you are getting very low framerates with that mod?
backup and delete the q3config.cfg inside of your mod folder then restart the game.
it will default to a lower resolution ..test at this resolution

ive seen this happen even in vq3. its not a framerate issue, its indeed probably a conflicting shader

that or windowed mode.

I think this is a server thing. It happens on many noghost freeze servers. A while ago I used to ask people to look at the flames and they were the same for everyone, but on some servers they would move. I didnt consider it a bug or anything, I was just curious but noone really paid attention to it and thought I was odd asking about it.

I remember changing dmflags and other stuff to see if some of the cvars affected it but it didnt change.

I posted a thread at noghost, maybe mav or someone will know :D

I've encoutered this before on servers that haven't been reset for ages. Decent servers are reset periodicsally, either automatically or by the admin manually doing it (I've been on a server before and the admin chatted in the console "need to reset the server ok" so we'd know the server would be back up in a bit and we could play then.)

I think a server needs to be reset once or twice a day.
A group of decent servers I used to play on regularly were reset at least once a day at about the same time each day (if not the exact time).
How often the server needs to be reset might depend on the OS the server is running I don't know.

It's definitely a problem not just for flames and 3D items but player movement aswell, at least enemy movement.

A lot of people might not notice it so easily cause they have graphics settings set to high visibilty whereby flames don't really show, and simpleitems on whereby the 3D items wouldn't show up, instead replaced by 2D ones, so they wouldn't notice them moving differently either.

I can't remember but I think it affected grenade movement aswell. I mean the appearance of grenade movement.

There are varying degrees of it, the flames can be jerky, very jerky, or frozen completely. The 3D items match. I think it gets progressively worse until they freeze (but you (the client) might need to reconnect or reload the map to see the change).

tl;dr: reset the server once or twice a day.

There is a bug in the stock Q3 where a (signed 32 bits) counter overflows but that happens after 24 days, not 2, and only if you stay that long on the same map (map changes reset the counter). It's fixed in ioquake3 BTW.

i played on a quake1 server almost every day for 2 years that only played one map.
