Well, are you surprised/complaining about seeing too many or too few maps?

There were about eight maps on the queue a few days ago, but it seems that some people have finally taken notice of Tig's pleas to provide reviews. ;)

-not complaining.

It's down to one map! I've never seen that before in the site's existance. The maps that just got reviewed have been sitting there for 2 months or slightly less... I'm not talking about reviews. I've probably done more reviews on the site than anyone else..minus some others which I can't remember their names. The maps that have been submitted over the last year have been pretty novice, except the mappers that have been around for quite a while that are courteous enough to submit their maps in every once in a while. :smirk: Apparently there aren't any mappers left anymore.

Mappers generally hang around active communities (ut4k/cod/hl/tf) and Q3 has hardly any left. Sure there are still places that do Q3 mapping but it is mostly mod forums (warsow/cpma/ut) and the amount of active mappers here you could count on one hand! This has been a long time coming and running out of maps to review after 10 years is damn impressive imho. I think it is about time that v1l3 started making maps to help keep the momentum going! :P

hehe..yeah I've been attempting to do that for a couple of years, but haven't gotten very far between a wife and kids that keep me a little too busy. I'm still trying to make it through the manual and understand it without being disturbed by something..I'm actually pretty amazed at how some people just pick it up quickly.

I really hope QL gets custom map functionality and that a really active mapping community grows again. That would be so sweet. Quake3 deserves it.

It's too bad that Lvl doesn't have a forum. That would be a good place to gather Q3 mappers, instead of having the few that still exist in various smaller level forums.

@hipshot, you should suggest it to tig at lvl, he might be interested. I know he had a beta section but not sure what happened to it anymore. I imagine if there was a QL mapping thing it would be at the QL forums, certainly not much here.

@v1l3, how are you going to become a mapper if you don't practice! ;)

Yes Sock.. you are definitely right, but I can't see myself releasing a map until it matches the same quality and playability as the maps that I like from other mappers. I dislike new mappers putting up there square box maps with a bunch of crap within it. :shrug: I have all of the tutorials..I'm trying to start with Bubba's. Slowly but Surely I guess.

@Hipshot-
Before Tig changed the look of the site, he had an alpha/beta section for mappers to use. I checked on it quite a bit, and some really good mappers that have never shown there face here(Q3W) or at Mapcenter..really surprised me because they were so good. :cool: Tig put up a note for people to request that the alpha/beta section stay around for the site change, but hardly anyone did. That was around the time Q4 was released, which killed alot of the mapping scene for Q3 anyway. Pretty depressing..well, for me at least.

@v1l3, how do you plan to make maps? got any gameplay alpha's? any stuff to test? The theme and art direction can come later but just blocks can be created really quick with basic tutorials.

@fkd, you don't suck, just hurry up! ;)

Practice doesn't mean releasing all the maps you make :sly:
When I wanted to make a map, I took half a year following every tutorial I could find and finding out what all the stuff was for (Bubba is indeed a good place to start), then I took half a year to make the map I had drawn out.

I think I have about everything that has been popped up out there..considering I'm probably about the biggest Q3 collector of things that just get thrown in different folders and get looked upon at some point, which is kind of a mess. =/ I'm kind of a packrat.

I've made my own .html set up for just that..to kind of keep the Tutorials somewhat organized...from GTK/Q3Map2 Manuals, Cardigan's aas page, Donkey's page, wvw's Competitive Design Guide, Bubba's Page. I'm sure there are more that I don't have, but I've kind of liked Bubba's since it's kind of like teaching for us dummies in the work. :D I still know nothing though, since I can't seem to remember what button does what..vertical or horizontal..and many other things...which like I said before, with distractions at home cutting me off half of the time.

..as far as .map file's, I have slightly over 1,200 maps, and there are a good amount of those maps that have their .map within their map's .pk3 file. That would take a long time to go through all of that to find which ones have them, but I know where some of them are.

I've been on dial up since 2002, and after that I went into a tough crowd of people that knew what they were doing in between making maps and making mods, and I've been caught up in that for so long that I probably would nearly never need a tester, except for weapon and item placement, though running a map for online testing these days is very difficult from what I have hear. In 2003-2004, I had a little joke to myself to see how many readme's that I could get my name into...I think it was about like 60 or so..heh, but anyways..I have GTK Radiant 1.4..but I'm wondering if I should move onto 1.5? It took me forever to download 1.4 on a dial-up, but through all of this...
I have finally gotten a DSL connection!! I can pretty much do what I want now with downloads, and I can play online now!!!! It's kind of weird playing though, in condering the players act alot different these days. Not to many newbs anymore and less talk and more play..kind of nice. I get my ass handed to me now..doesn't matter though.
The best thing though, is that if someone wants to do some online map testing, I'm up for it!!! I'd probably learn alot from that also :D

Fixed. =)

Code: Select all

#!/usr/bin/perl -w

use Archive::Zip;

for my $archive (@ARGV)
{
        my $zip = Archive::Zip->new($archive) or die("$0: $archive: read error");
        map { print "$archive: $_\n" } grep { /\.map$/ } $zip->memberNames;
}
Install ActivePerl, save this scriptlet as e.g. findmaps.pl and run it as `findmaps.pl *.pk3`

Windows expands wildcards now, does it? If not, install Cygwin and run it from there.

You are all losers. I know the days where you dialed yourself in a BBS with 2400 bps - and each connection needed its own telephone line. Those were the days.

I am an old fuck.

Get off my lawn, grasshopper. I've dialed in with 300 baud modems, the kind where you typed faster than the connection could handle.
