Q3 freezes up

Post by CopperWire »

Hi. When I play Q3 lately, it freezes up on me at random. I will be playing, and it will freeze, and I'll have to restart my computer to fix it. I have the latest point releases, and the CPMA mod. Q3 freezes in both the CPMA mod and vanilla Q3, however there is another oddity in that some maps have vanished from the skirmish list in vanilla Q3, while some appear in CPMA and not vanilla, and others do not appear at all. There is another error in which, in my vanilla skirmish menu, I have four levels, which display the Q3 logo instead of a levelshot, and have just a few letters, or a thick yellow bar as their name. Also, in CPMA, not all maps load: They just cut back to the main menu at "Connecting to localhost."

In conclusion, I'd like to add that if I've already registered an account here I apologize: The registry form did look rather familiar, however I find it irksome that mail.ru is a banned provider.

Thank you!

What are your system specs?

mail.ru is banned as there are apparently more spammers than actual people in Russia.

Uh, it's a Gateway DX4200-09, AMD Phenom Quad-core processor, and according to the tag on the side (which may be wrong because we ended up with a better processor in it than it was supposed to have), an ATI Raden HD 3200 integrated graphics card.

go to the Gateway site and download all the latest drivers for that system.

before playing quake3 shut down background programs you do not need running.

Hi Copper.

I think you have a lot of custom maps and content loaded onto the game? Q3 has a bit of a problem with handling lots of custom content, although some mods e.g. CPMA attempt to fix the issues.

Best approach I know if is to keep the Q3 installation quite clean and only install the components you need for online play, then create a second Q3 install where you can load on lots of custom content and play around.... swapping out the various mods and maps so that you're only running a few at one time.

A bit laborious but it should be effective.

I deleted all the stock CPM maps out of BaseQ3 and now CPMA can't load any maps at all. >_<

Would IOQuake help with the lots of maps problem? And how can I fix CPMA?

CPMA won't run without its maps, no amount of ioquake3 is going to fix that. I suggest you do a clean install of Q3A, install PR 1.32 then 1.32c, then do a clean install of CPMA on top of that.

I put the maps back an switched over to IOQ3. I think it's fixed now. Check the other, similar thread in the main Quake III forum to see my full details. :)
