Rock:
I will likely post more as I learn.
(Keep in mind that I'm just learning and fiddling with some stuff.)

I got to be honest, they look very noisy and pale. I think if you reduce the noise level you will get a much better result.
The last one is the better, but it has the wrong dimensions =)

What image source did you use? Which art package? The last image is not really the right size, it will cause problems with scaling and mipmaps. It is usually best to make textures fit a power of 2 scale, like 128,256,512 etc
If you are interested in how I created the textures for my
Pyramid of the Magician map, I released all the
source files including most of the
texture files. The zip file is 48Mb in size and includes most of the original files in a mixture of PaintshopPro and Photoshop formats. They are indeed old and certainly not perfect examples of how to create textures but they might help with your process.

Looks like Filter Forge work to me. And as work that should be used as a layer or modifier for something else, and not stand on its own feet..

Indeed. I am just getting started so I was looking for how to make the textures better. I actually did do much to the result, it's just probably not apparent.
I used filter forge for photoshop. Just bought it, pretty nifty stuff.

If you are going to start off generating things with filters and procedural layers, might I suggest this:

Though it's still not a replacement for hand painted or photo-sourced textures, IMO. I suggest using those procedural tools with painted/photo textures and creating a mixture of the two.

looks like Photoshop's Lighting Effects filter with a clouds layer as texturechannel, tbh

Thank you all for the feedback. I am working more diligently on this and may post more in the future.
