Resonance of Fate

Post by bitWISE »

Not sure if any of the other JRPG nerds missed this release too, but it seems to be a pretty sweet game so far. The combat system is pretty awesome and incredibly unforgiving. As an example of just how bad it can be, I got into a fight on the way to the tutorial arena and had a game over within 5 minutes of turning the game on. And at that point your choices are, pay money to replay the fight, go to your last save (no autosaves), or quit playing. Once you get the hang of it though, you can really decimate a fight. They manged to merge very fast paced decision making and reactions with careful tactical execution. The biggest element is probably scratch damage (DoT but cant kill) versus direct damage (which causes existing scratch damage to apply instantly) and the fact that they are healed and effect you differently. Also, your "power-up" uses the same shards as the thing that keeps you getting one-shot like a bitch. You can utilize cover and a lot of enemies have shields with separate HP that you should optimally position yourself to shoot around. The arena system also offers up a single player combat tournament with ranks and rewards. The world map is a really interesting twist too. You have to unlock areas using different shaped/colored hexagon tiles like a giant puzzle.

They're right about the story though...so far there pretty much isn't one. I'd say it is worth a rent just to give the combat a try.
