DVD ripping software.

I know this has been asked several times, but all the old archives and stuff is gone. I would just like your opinion on the best dvd ripping software. And before anyone says anything about wares, these are my own dvds purchased legaly. Now that I have a burner I would like to keep the originals in good shape and watch the copies.

DVDShrink is good for movies.

DVD XCopy Express is really simple and always works for me.

DVD Decryptor is a great program too.

DVD Decryptor to rip to HD.
Then DVDShrink to fit on one reagular DVD. Drop the stereo track (keep 5.1), French, Spanish, extras, previews and all that useless stuff. Shrink the menus max and the movie min.

DVD XCopy Express does everything for you.

All you do is click start

It copies and asks for a blank DVD

Put in blank DVD

Click start again and it burns.

You're done.

Simple.

YGP's method is simpler, but will produce a much lower quality backup. I've only made two backups, but I was able to put the entire movie on one DVD without any compression useing my method. Granted, I chopped previews and extended scenes and such. YGP's method will preserve all that extra content, but the actual movie will not look nearly as good.

Have you ever used DVD XCopy?

Because I'm not seeing this loss of quality you're talking about.

The movies I've copied look great. :icon22:

I used it at one point, and was generally unimpressed with the results. Not only was there a massive logo at the start of every movie stating it was a backup, I was unable to copy a copy, as DVDXCopy purposely broke one of the files so that a PC DVD-ROM drive couldn't rip it. That, and I noticed artifacting like mad on all but the shortest movies. I paid $100 for that POS, only to find DVD Shrink did the EXACT same thing, just as easily, and didn't cost a dime.

I've never had any quality issues or artifacting.

To get past the copying issue, I just backed up the file to another directory before I started writing. If I wanted to burn the file again, I just used nero or alcohol 120%.

BTW, I got it for free too.

Not personally, but I've watched backups created by a buddy that used it. The quality was unacceptable for me.

I use DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink.

I rip the DVD using the 'file' mode with DVD Decrypter.

Then I use DVD Shrink to read from those files.
Then I click on 'Re-author'.
I then drag the Main Movie folder over to the left hand column.
Then I click on the compression settings tab.
Under the Audio section I leave on AC3 5.1-ch English.
Under the Subpicture section I leave on English and remove everything else.
Sometimes you'll get directors comments on one of those and you might want to leave it on, but I normally take them off.

Also you should see two arrows beside the red X.
When you click on this you should be able to adjust the Start Frame and End Frame of the movie.

I usually pop in the DVD into my player and start to play the movie.
Sometimes you'll get the logo at the beginning.
I sometimes trim this down a few frames until I get it until the movie begins. But what they usually do is start to play music before the logo appears so I end up keeping it in.

Once I've trimmed the front I goto the end of the movie and also do some trimming there. I trim after the credits disappear or until the music stop.
You can save a couple MB by doing this.
Kinda nice to when you pop in the movie and you don't get the logos but just the movie starts playing.

Special Features on a DVD:
I don't care about how they made a movie so I don't care about having the extras on the DVD. If you really wanted that you could burn that onto a seperate DVD if your using single sided DVD's.
